Do you know a good way to remember what fish to buy?

I can never remember what kind of fish I’m “supposed” to buy: farmed vs wild, Pacific vs Atlantic, etc. Is there an iphone app that helps with this? I’ve done a search but haven’t come up with anything.

Never, never buy any farmed fish. That’s all you need to know.
@gailcalled It’s actually a lot more complex than that. I mean, farmed fish are generally bad, but there are also “good” and “bad” wild fish, depending on ecosystem type things and seasonal things etc. I can’t say that I know which is good and which is bad (I’m a terrible fish biologist), but there were pamphlets around my department that said. Don’t know if there’s an iPhone app though, sorry. Maybe find a site that says and bookmark it on your iPhone?
Oh, Lordy! An app to buy fish? Is there one to find the men’s room? I stay away from all farmed fish, I stay away from tilapia, I find you can get pretty good wild-caught swordfish and bluefin tuna, but it has always been previously flash frozen. Well, all the sushi you’ve ever eaten in America has been flash frozen, too, so that’s not so bad. just limit your servings. Mercury, you know.
@pdworkin I wouldn’t know if there’s an app to find the men’s room, as I’m a woman. but I don’t think it’s that silly to want to be responsible in buying seafood. The fishing industry is a HUGE burden on the environment, so not sure why you’re making fun of it.
I’m certainly not making fun of your concern – I gave you a careful answer containing my fish-buying beliefs. I was making fun of Apple and iPhone. I’m sorry that wasn’t clear.
I thought this was concerning buying a fish as a pet.
that’s how little I know about fish
@pdworkin: No worries. I don’t live in America anyway (I live in France) so I don’t know if my fish would be flash-frozen. I doubt it.
@patg7590: Ha, no! But that’s funny.
Well, the pollution of fishing areas is worldwide, so my advice to be careful about how often you eat fish is still important to consider. Haddock and cod are still fished sustainably. Tuna, not so much. Atlantic wild-caught salmon is delicious but expensive, as the demand exceeds supply, and in my opinion all farmed fish is to be avoided. They add antibiotics to the feed, water and dyes to the flesh of the fish, etc., etc.
@breedmitch: That looks great, although American-centric. I’m sure the advice would be different for a French consumer than for an American consumer, as the available fish is certainly different, and the distance to travel differs, etc. Still, I’ll download it as a guide. Thanks!
If anyone knows of a European guide, sent it my way!
Fuck all the stupid political concerns.
Trust your palate to decide.
Yeah. Fuck overfishing. Fuck the environment. Fuck common sense. Fuck health concerns. Just do whatever you please and let someone else clean up your mess.
Are you aware that there’s more to life than handwringing and preaching, good seafood for example?
You did notice the OP had the good sense to put “supposed” in quotes?
waits eagerly to see where this is going
Are you aware that there is more to life than pathological narcissism? Grownups tend to think responsibility is important.
If I was truly a narcissist why would I be making my suggestion to another person?
Oh, I know, because the idea of wanting another to enjoy a perfect piece of fish without being distracted by meaningless sensations of guilt would never occur to you.
@sophied nice find! I’m getting it now for the iPod Touch lol
@sophied Finally! Genuine laughter! Thank you.
@patg7590 I have a touch, too. I just hope I have wifi when I need sitorsquat!
@sophied perhaps, you could plan all your routes from home using sitorsquat, always knowing where the next closest one is. So on your way to buy this much disputed fish, you can travel safely knowing your bladder is mere minutes away from ultimate release. All thanks to Fluther. :]
