What dual-layer DVDs should I use with my Early 2008 MacBook Pro to back-up data?

I have read a lot of comments on how certain DVDs wouldn’t work with X,Y, and Z burners or other hardware configurations, and since DL DVDs cost 50 dollars, I want to make an informed decision before I buy.
Does anyone know what DVDs would work with an Early 2008 Mac?

for backup? I’d totally use a hard drive rather than DL dvds. More cost effective and safer.
For what its worth, I still archive on memorex or verbatim, but I think the same company makes them both.
If you are in the US, DVD+R DL are the type you want and the brand that is most reliable is Verbatim. They come in 20-packs. It’s what I use for video. Check and make sure that your burner can autotype for you (meaning it will be able to tell what type of disc you’ve inserted), or else you will have to manually configure the break between layers for your burner. I don’t know how to do that myself, but I have a good burner.
Even then, there’s all sorts of things to look out for. The DVDs’ cakebox case label should read “Made in Singapore”. For some reason, those are less likely to become coasters than those made for Verbatim elsewhere.
You can get more detailed info about DVD media on this site.
Good luck!
