What advertisers are left with Glen Beck?

Asked by Judi (40025points) September 26th, 2009

I don’t think I could stomach watching the show, but I would like to know who is left? Is anyone boycotting the advertisers he has left? Should we boycott advertisers of shows that use their free speech to spew hate?

Rachel Maddow and Chris Matthews spewed hate during the election. I don’t see anyone boycotting NBC.

I know I’ll get spit on but I don’t see how Beck (even though I don’t believe in everything that he has to say) is any different than those that are just as passionate on the other side.

note- Though Beck is conservative, he’s not Republican.

@jonsblond ; Can you give me an example of “Hate spewing” from MSNBC folks?

Sarcasm's avatar

@jonsblond I never heard either of those names come up in the very limited number of news I paid attention to. Did either of them say anything like ”[Obama has] a deep seated hatred for white people”, as Beck did on another Fox program?

There aren’t many left. Last gawker article about it (here, August 19th) shows it’s just a handful of riffraff. Whatever riffraff may mean.

I was glued to the television during the election. Mostly MSNBC. Matthews and Maddow were terrible with Hillary Clinton. I was a huge supporter of Clinton and they bashed her on a daily basis. Give me a moment if you would like examples.

Obviously it’s ok to bash a woman running for president but it’s not ok to bash a black man.~

Matthews and Maddow were harsh with Clinton (who had experience) while they had a love affair with Obama (who had no experience).

@jonsblond I honestly didn’t see that clip as bashing Clinton, though it was definitely a bit sexist. It’s not outright hatred of the nature Beck puts out. Also, he’s become increasingly nutty, seeing conspiracy around every corner.

Probably the NRA and the makers of Zoloft.

Does it go by individual show? I thought advertisers were just with the tv station itself. I don’t really know how that works.

@jonsblond, I didn’t see that clip as bashing Clinton either, but as reflective of the way most men in America view her. There are men that hate her solely because of her gender, not because of what she stands for. She is continually held to a different standard. As an example, when was the last time what a male candidate wore held up for for scrutiny as a reason not to vote for them? Hillary had to defend wearing pant suits on the campaign trail.

Glen Beck still has Enzyte as a sponsor, so I guess that product knows the audience they want.

With Glen Beck I think advertisers should pull out because the man is quite obviously unstable. I can so see him pulling one of these shots followed by this. Just a little surreal for my taste.

@casheroo There are advertisers who just tell the network “Put my ad in any timeslot, any show” but there are also advertisers who specify the timeslot and/or show.

The fact that other people do bad things mean that doing bad things is no longer a bad thing.

Kanye west said president bush hated black people, and that idiot still makes tons of money from his followers and radio play.

Judi's avatar

@critter1982 , I’m not a fan of Kanye West OR Glen Beck.

eponymoushipster's avatar

@critter1982 imma let you finish, but i just wanna say @RyanM had the best answer in the whole thread.

Rozee's avatar

@RyanM I had no idea these kinds of lists existed. I agree with @eponymoushipster that yours was the best answer so far. Facts are useful bits of info. It was interesting that the web site sourced, provided contact info for those sponsors who were not withdrawing support but not for those who had already walked away from either Beck or Fox News or from both.

I am all for having folks speak up to say any fool thing they want, that is, as long as I have the right to completely ignore any fool thing they actually do say. There are two groups of people I don’t want saying foolish thing, those who work for me and those for whom I work; their foolishness has real world ramifications on my real world.

There is no way I’m going to watch his show just to find out.

BBQsomeCows's avatar

yes who would want to advertise on a show with higher ratings for the time slot than ALL THE OTHER NETWORKS combined

why that would be evil capitalism at work

forsooth

Sarcasm's avatar

Because of the content of that show. The companies don’t want to be stuck with the image of Glenn Beck and his “Our president is a racist” idea [among others].
