Why aren't all my computer speakers working?

I have a 5.1 speaker system connected to my motherboard, not a sound card. All of the speaker cables are connected to the motherboard properly, but only two of the speakers emit sound (plus the subwoofer). How can I get all of them to work properly?

Presumably you’ll have some kind of utility down in your taskbar, somewhere. If you’re running Windows. It’s probably set for a two speaker set up. You might be able to go to the control panel and change your setup there.
@mrentropy I am running Windows and I have a program, “Realtek HD Audio Manager”. I opened it and it is set to 5.1 speakers. In the control panel I’m also configured for a 5.1 setup. And when I do test for both program I do hear sound coming from all speakers! However when I play music, play audio from YouTube, etc. I only hear sound from 2 speakers (plus the subwoofer).
If the files are encoded as 2-channel stereo only, that’s all you’re going to get playing back. You can convert the signals, though, if you want. The sound won’t be the greatest, but it’s possible.
@aprilsimnel I see. I thought that all audio would play through all speakers by default.
I know nothing of audio channels and probably sound very stupid, but have you also changed the windows audio settings? Mine are stereo by default.
