Do teenagers still "drag Main"?

Asked by knitfroggy (8982points) September 27th, 2009

I think the first place I ever went when I turned 16 and got my license was Main Street. Every Friday and Saturday night we wasted so much gas endlessly driving up and down Main Street. Did you drag main? Do teenagers still do that? I’m curious.

Oh, yeah. Certain wide-lane boulevards in Brooklyn and Queens are notorious for it.

I remember driving around town a whole lot when the first few of us got our licenses. We never went up and down our Main street though. Then again, it’s a rural town and the main street has nothing more exciting than a K-Mart or Stater Bros. (Not even a movie theater or arcade)

When I was a teenager, I didn’t even bother getting a driver’s license. I believed (and I still do) in not wasting gasoline and not polluting the Earth.

You mean “Market”? :)

We drove around downtown a lot, but never raced or anything.

We probably did. We drove up to our local movie theater a lot, or drove around this stupid back road. Anywhere in about a 5 mile radius we cruised pretty frequently. It’s funny what good memories those are :)

It’s illegal in most places.

If I wasn’t afraid my car would break down in the middle of the busiest intersection, that would’ve been fun. We did kinda do that after everything but Wal-Mart was closed at night.

Nearly 40 years ago we would drag Van Nuys Blvd, in L.A.‘s San Fernando Valley from Burbank to just before Roscoe. We’d visit Mike’s Pizza for a bowl of Minestrone and the best garlic cheese bread. On one of our turnarounds, while turning left on Burbank as the lights changed some guy coming from the other direction, went to run the light, locked up his bakes and came to a stop literally within an inch of hitting us. All but our driving friend were luckily very stoned and it felt like we must have been saved by an opportunely placed invisible thick cotton pad from heaven. It did, however, take our sober driving friend several minutes to shake off the rush (actually, he then got high too and we called it a night as for driving and retreated to the garage of another friend, for music, munchies and more fun).
See ya….Gary/wtf

Teens used to do it here, downtown, just like teens did it when my parents were that age. However, they outlawed it for my generation and all generations to follow.

I’m in a very small town. It was a right of passage when I was growing up. I didn’t get it. It seemed pointless to me. I have moved back to the small town. Teens still do it. It’s still a right of passage. I still don’t get it.

But now I feel old – because it’s too loud and you’re in my way! Go home you foolish kids! Haven’t you seen the gas prices!?!?!

My students still drag main. I never did (but then again I was driving my parent’s Cutlass Cruiser station wagon.)
