Help! I need five work-related references for a job I'm applying for, but my most recent job was owning my own business for 4 years. Any suggestions for references?

Asked by Val123 (12739points) September 28th, 2009

The shop I owned was a TINY small business. No employees of any standing who could vouch for me. I’ve decided to use a couple of the bank VP’s who lent me money, one to start the business, and another to buy a building down town. Before that shop I worked for four years company who has since sold out. I’m still in contact with my old super, so that’s a good one, but everyone else is scattered to the three winds. Before THAT I worked worked for Rubbermaid in customer service, and they transferred my department out of state 14 years ago. I don’t know what to do!

I used clients when I was in similar circumstances – they could testify as to the quality of my work.

As others have already said, what about clients? Or customers, if you prefer that term.

@pdworkin So right. I saw yours after I hit the button.

Clients, customers, vendors, all would be good references.

You could also ask other shop owners (neighbors) to be your references, especially if they could ouch for your work ethic.

Why didn’t I think of that!! It’s a no-brainer! Thank you! Excellent!

Why don’t we all get together and do some coke? Errh – have a coke…...

@Val123 I have owned/do own a small biz…Other business owners are the best references, as they have a standing in the community
