Best US wine (excluding CA, OR & WA)

Just curious, why are you taking CA, OR, and WA out of the equation?

You should take NM out, because it sure as hell ain’t here, although Gruet sparkling wines are well regarded nationally.

I’d hate to remove my favorite region, WA, from the equation (Chateau St. Michelle is my favorite), but there are many good wineries in the Finger Lakes region of New York.

Bully Hill Vineyard wines (NY) are pretty good. @Les is definitely correct about the wineries in the Finger Lakes. My grandparents are from that area and there’s a ton of great vineyards there. My mom used to pick grapes at the vineyards when she was in high school.

Hard to say. I’d either go with Macari, Cabernet Franc from Long Island or perhaps Becker Vinyard, Malbec from the Texas Hill Country AVA.
That’s of course my answer for mid-priced wines.

@kevbo: The first time I visited the Gruet Winery (almost 15 years ago) it was a portable building on the side of the highway. There weren’t any vineyards in sight (they sourced all their grapes) but one could catch a nice view of the trailer park nearby. That notwithstanding, upon tasting I knew they had something special going on. Yes, they are would class sparkling wines.

over from France and the winemaker, I guess is the real deal. My sister taught their spoiled brats children gymnastics.

You might be interested in Anasazi Fields for some novelty. Super dry fruit wines that are a whole different ball game and quite an acquired taste.

I’m no wino myself but I know that Texas wines are regarded as America’s best kept secrets by experts.
