As you're starting to fall asleep, do you get kind of an advanced warning that you're going to have a nightmare so you can wake yourself up?

Asked by Val123 (12739points) September 29th, 2009

I really don’t have nightmares any more (which I just realized—isn’t that odd?) but when I was a kid, if I started to drift off to sleep and I got this black, falling, spinning sensation, like I was getting sucked into a whirlpool then I knew that was the harbinger of a nightmare, so I’d wake myself up and start over until I didn’t have that feeling any more. Sometimes had to try it 4 or 5 times, but I’d eventually get it licked. One time I decided to just let it happen. OMG. I can remember that horrible dream to this day.

Wow, no, I’ve never experienced it. You’re kind of lucky you have that kind of warning system.

The closest I’ve ever come is half waking up during a nightmare and knowing I shouldn’t go back to sleep until my head is filled with happy thoughts.

@Likeradar As I talk to other people, I think I’m weird when it comes to dreams!

Wish I had that warning. Last nights nightmare I would gladly have passed on.

You are very lucky. I am 23 years old and still have nightmares that often leave me terrified even once I have woken up to realise that “it was all just a bad dream”. I wish I had these premonitions before I bad dream so that I could, like you, wake myself up before it got really bad.

@Dog Have you ever tried to consciously recognize it when you’re falling asleep? Maybe you ARE getting a warning, but you’re missing it?
@Leanne1986 Man, I’m sorry….

Sometimes when I’m about to fall asleep, I’ll close my eyes and this HORRIBLE image will just pop up behind my eyelids, so I wake myself up a bit till it all goes away.

i really dont start getting so-called nightmares until early dawn or about an hour before needing to wake up for work. as waking time draws nigh, my subconscience is tethering with reality and i have dreams that seem real like a gun is pointed at my back or i’m falling off a cliff. yeah, stuff like that.

and in full color!
