Is it wise for a girl to travel to Africa or Nepal alone?

Asked by stardust (10565points) September 29th, 2009

I’d like to begin my travels as soon as possible. As I don’t have ample amounts of money, I think it might be better to stick to one continent. I might travel to Africa or Nepal. Is it wise for a young girl to travel to either place alone?

I wouldn’t, but I know plenty of women who have, and would tell you that as long as you are careful, you’d be OK. What about Australia and New Zealand?

I’d like to visit Oz or New Zealand at some stage, but not right now. I’ve come back from South Africa and had an amazing experience there, but I’d like to see more of Africa. I’ve also always wanted to go to Nepal.

My daughter spent 6 months in Thailand, Cambodia and Laos on a motor scooter a few years ago when she was around 25, and more recently went to Namibia to work in a wildlife rehabilitation center, caring for lions, cheetahs, tigers, elephants, chimpanzees and other creatures.

She seems to have had a wonderful time, and no regrets.

I know lots of women who have traveled places alone, had an unbelievable experience, come home, and then done it again or continued with their lives. At this point, being only 20, I’m still a little scared to venture off by myself. Especially to a place like Africa, even though I desperately want to go there. But if you prepare yourself and you know what to expect, you’ll probably be fine. I’ll go with!

In my opinion it would not be a wise thing to do. There are far safer places to go for a young woman to travel to and become travel savvy, while still enjoying the experience of total emersion in a foreign culture. Asia springs to mind, for instance.

That being said…
It is the prerogative of youth not to do what is wise, but rather what is in your heart.

How young is young? Go, enjoy yourself but don’t be reckless.

What do you mean by Africa? It is huge and diverse. It’s like saying ‘I want to go to Europe’. All the countries in Europe are different and so are the countries in Africa. Imagine an European saying ‘I want to go to America and mean all of the Americas’. That is just silly. As to Africa, traveling alone or otherwise to Liberia or Sierra Leone or Sudan might not be smart but South Africa, Egypt, Tanzania, Tunisia or Morocco – no problem.

And if you want to stick to a continent what does Nepal have to do with it?

My daughter spent some time in Namibia, working as a wildlife rehabilitator – Lions and cheetahs and baboons, oh, my! She had a lot of fun
