Has anyone ever tried to control or manipulate the course of their dreams, while dreaming?

Ever since I was 9 or 10 I have been an active dreamer. It doesn’t always work, and sometimes I don’t want to change the course of a dream.
I’m not talking about using outside stimuli to influence dreams. I’m referring to a semi-conscious state within a dream when 1) you realize that you are dreaming 2) within the dream (from the inside) you attempt to change the course of your dream.

I’ve tried, but haven’t been able to get there. I’m desperate for my own holodeck.
Yeppers. I flew to outer space with the idea I was going to visit all the planets! And then report my findings to science. They probably wouldn’t have listened to me tho! Humph!
Many times when I become aware I’m dreaming, I attempt to change things, but I realize that I can’t keep myself from waking and within a few seconds, I’m awake. It’s actually kinda disappointing. :P
I think there’s a way to do so. First you must think of something and apply it to memory as “seeing this thing” will unlock your awareness of being in a dream state. Once that has happened you’re supposed to have free range, but I myself haven’t been able to put it in motion since very rarely do I even remember if I was dreaming or not. Though the dreams I do remember are very interesting and kind of don’t make any sense. Although I have fallen in love in a couple of my dreams, lol.
@Axemusica I fell in love in my dream once…extremely intense feeling, and a HUGE let down when I woke up!
@Val123 I know right? You wake up and realize it wasn’t real and immediately become depressed. Kind of makes you wonder though. If that person was actually a real person, would you go try to find them if possible?
Val123: I know what you mean. It is a huge let down! The dreams where I get emotionally invested in the outcome become so real.
I always try to and this is the way we teach our kids to deal with nightmares.
Sometimes our kids wake up startled and crying. We always go over, comfort them and then remind them that they are the ones in control of their dream.
It is always great to I see them realize that and then eagerly go back to sleep to fight their dragons and come out on top.
@Axemusica Yes, I think I would, if I had any idea where to find them! The only clue was a sand dune near the ocean, and a half open garage door. I live in Kansas….we don’t have garage doors in Kansas. See.
@davidk; by “active dreaming” you mean “lucid dreaming”. go and search fluther for “lucid dreaming”. I suggested a site which could help you out with it.
Yep I Lucid Dream (realize i’m dreaming) quite often. Sometimes, not every time, I attempt to change the dream. Typically it works for awhile but often it makes me wake up sooner than I would have if I would have just let things be. I read a great book about why that happens, why we wake up when we try and change things. They say that you can develop techniques, like spinning in place, when you feel like you are about to wake up that’ll help you stay in-dream. The book was called “The Head Trip”. It’s a good read, I don’t agree with all the author’s conclusions but his research is very interesting and his writing style is quite entertaining.
When I have a nightmare I try to turn it into Halo 3. Doesn’t really work well. But I have sometimes managed to get a battle rifle to spawn. But thats probably because I play to much Xbox 360.
Yes, my current pre-occupation.
I had lucid dreams a few times. For me, when I realized that I am dreaming is the turning point where I can control my actions in my dream. Anything is possible. I love it! I read about lucid dreams at one point. They even use it to train Olympic athletes.
@Val123 I once had a dream that was so real; I knew the person’s name, I could see him clearly, and everything we encountered as as focused as real life. There was none of that weird flying or changing scenes or skipping around that one sees in normal dreams. That was over a decade ago. to this day, I wonder if it was simply a dream, or an OOBE. His name was Michael, and i loved him as one would love a member of the opposite sex. We never had any carnal relations, but the possibility was close. It was as if we were going to do “it” but first, we had to become closer as friends.
I still remember enough of it for the thought of what I experienced to be questioned if it was true or not. I’ve even found myself looking for him in the real world when I am awake. So far, no luck.
To answer the question, controlling your dreams is called lucid dreaming and I’ve never been able to do it successfully.
Yes, I have changed things in my dreams a number of times. As @davidk you said, it doesn’t always work, but it can be done! The most common one for me is drowning. I can make myself breath under water!
@ShanEnri that would be awesome! Do you ever develop flippers or something to let you swim faster?
@Axemusica No flippers or anything like that, but I have made it more interesting by putting a lost city under the water or something like that!
