I'm Failing 11th Grade, Is there a chance that I can go to school online or something?

Asked by YOUNGx420xBABII (22points) September 30th, 2009

School is to complicated for me, I hardly ever go anymore. And like, When I wake up in the morning I just pass out again, When I do go I get in trouble, never do work, and skip on occasion. I wanted to know if there are online schools, or websites to get home schooled or something. I know theres GED but a bunch of friends told me that if I go there, its longer days, and I cant be in school cause I have a tendency to get side tracked and NOT do work.

Sorry, well, you can go to continuation school instead, ask your parents if they will let you transfer.
You get to go like 1 time a week.

Do you know where thoes schools are located at in Rochester NY?

The GED is not a good option. Finish high school even though it’s tough. If I gave you any other advice, I’d be giving you bad advice.

Your 420 moniker suggests that you’re smoking pot.
I guarantee if you stop smoking so much pot, you will do better in school.

Maybe that’s not what you want to hear right now, but consider it.
Or don’t. This one’s entirely on you.

There is something that I used to call “Alternative School” but I’m sure it has a more formal name. I know they still exist as I have many friends who are teachers. Anyhow I would go half a day, at night (by choice at night but there was a morning session as well). They gave me a binder per class. Told me to fill out the work inside and at the end I’d take a test. They let me re-test too if I didn’t pass. It was very easy and you could go at your own pace. No dealing with teachers etc.. unless you needed to ask a question then they’d help out. I did this my Junior year to make up credits for what I missed. Then I went back and did a normal Senior year.

Not all GED classes are long. Hubby went to them when he was young, just a couple hours a night. Find one that fits you if the GED is your choice.

There are lots of education options. Don’t give up until you find one that works.

Alternative School? Imma ask the same thing, are there any in Rochester NY?

Look for a GED course. You don’t need to graduate high school if you get a GED. It’s 95% as good. Especially if you go to college afterwards…but it sounds like you should work somewhere for awhile before going to college…to get a feel for how much manual labor can suck.

Try not doing drugs.

YOUNGx420xBABII's avatar

LOL TRY NOT DOING DRUGS.
Even before Drugs, I sucked in middle school to.

RedPowerLady's avatar

@YOUNGx420xBABII I found this with a google search. I’m not sure if it is the same type of alternative school I went to but even if not they should be able to help you find one that fits you.

May I ask what you plan to do later on in your life? Discipline and focus are skills that you absolutely must develop at some point, and high school, where the stakes are relatively low, is probably the best place to practice before you go out into the real world. You can’t hold down a 9 to 5 if you can’t motivate yourself to wake up and do work. So whatever you do, don’t try to find a program that will allow you to get by without putting in effort, and don’t avoid something like GED just because it will require hard work and long days. I’m not saying you shouldn’t get help from auxiliary programs, such as tutoring if you have trouble grasping the material, or some sort of study group if you just can’t make yourself do the work. What I am saying is that you will have to learn to deal with pressures far greater than those of high school, so now is the time to start learning.

@YOUNGx420xBABII

If the above doesn’t work you can call your local schools administrative office.
For example I live in Lane County. I’d call ‘lane county school district office’ (found in the phonebook) and ask them for references based on my needs.

Thanks RedPowerLady=) I officially love you. I’ll call them in the morning.

Have you been tested for any attention or learning disorders? I know it’s not an answer to your question…

Go to your school counselor and explain what you need. Ask them for a modified class schedule. When my grandson had the same problem, we found a program that offered an outreach schedule. The student attends class twice a week for ½ day to receive the assignments and take completion tests. The actual work is done at home, on your own time.

Check how many more credits/classes you need to graduate and see if you can graduate early, that’s what I did. My principal was not thrilled but he agreed in the end. I doubled up on English and took a couple of other requirements and got out midyear my senior year. Knowing the light at the end of te tunnel was not that far off helped a lot, and I got the best grades I had ever earned that senior semester. If you check now maybe you can take summer school and get out a year early? My mom did that in The Bronx years ago.

Or, maybe you can take a partial day of school and then leave early to work or something. Try to finish High School if you can.

Yes you can. Because of family issues I didn’t graduate due to TWO classes that I lost credit for. I made the classes up with Penn Foster and got my diploma from my HS once I finished. You can do it for any classes you mess up with.

I don’t see how homeschooling is going to help you with your lack of self motivation, won’t it only make it worse? Won’t you get sidetracked 24/7?

Failing a year should be your wakeup call. I failed a year once, you know why? Not because I didn’t know how to learn, but because I didn’t have my priorities straight. I got sidetracked all the time. Why study if you can wait till the very last minute and use the rest of the time to have fun. Yes, at the time it was the worst thing that ever happened to me, and I blamed everyone but myself. But you know what? A year later I was a different person. I learned from the experience, got good grades, made new friends, but most importantly I got my act together. The rest of high school was a piece of cake. Well, except for all the teenage drama ;).

I realize your description is only short, and maybe there are some valid issues for why you are having trouble at school. I’m probably projecting the younger me onto you, no one can tell except for you yourself.

@markyy In our family, homeschooling worked because the boys could choose any time of the day or night to do their work, and didn’t have to stick to someone else’s schedule. They ususally slept in late, and then did most of their work after eating, during the afternoon hours. They were required to do at least 4 hours of work a day, but without any interruptions of other students or any other outside influences, it went farily fast. They were usually done in time to go on the computer with their RPG friends.

Push through high school, you won’t regret it. Completely agree with @The_Compassionate_Heretic also. Don’t smoke as much. Seriously. As someone who’s been there not smoking helps. And if you absolutely must…do it on the weekends and focus on school and other things during the week.

I’d say, join the military. They will set you on the straight and narrow. Especially if you do not have any direction.

J0E's avatar

It’s probably not what you want to hear but you just need to stop looking for an easy way out. Stop with the drugs, go to class, and do the work.

Suck it up.

School is typically boring, it’s not fun, and sure as hell you’re going to get in trouble when you go, if you’re skipping frequently.

Nobody wakes up in the morning and DOESN’T want to go back to sleep! I know a lot of people who actually need to set their alarms up across the room from where they sleep, so they are forced to physically get up to turn it off. Or else they turn it off in their sleep!

Set multiple alarms, and set them away from your bed! This will force you to get up. Would you rather go back to bed once you’re physically up? OF COURSE! Everyone would rather go back to bed!

I’ve done online classes – they require more self-discipline than classes you physically have to attend. You think you have a hard time focusing in class? You think you’re easily distracted? The solution is most definitely not going to be online classes. With one click of a button you can be using chat, playing games, reading friends blogs, using social networking sites etc, etc, etc instead of homework.

Home schooling and online classes require a lot more self motivation than “normal” classes. Suck it up, and go to school.

My only experience of extramural tertiary study taught me that you really have to be very self disciplined to succeed, it is simply a waste of time and money otherwise I was studying as a mature student and had made the decision to study, it was excellent for me I would not recommend it to somebody who is as unmotivated as you seem to be.

Are there any alternative schools in your area? They may actually be the answer you’re looking for. I had trouble in a regular school setting as well. Switching to an alternative school made all the difference.
