Are there any poets (or people who like to write poetry) here on Fluther?

Asked by lloydbird (8740points) October 1st, 2009

And if so, would you care to post any of your work here for viewing? I know that I for one would be interested in viewing it. You will probably get some good feedback from the residents. And who knows who might see it. It could just lead to something for you.
Lyricists need not exclude themselves.

By the way, I am neither a poet or lyricist, but I do have an appreciation of both.

I presume that your statutory copyright rules apply.

The Expected Lifespan of Blackbirds

In that elemental, autonomous way of birds
Each instance of visitation, near but not too near,
Exemplifies a carefully measured contribution
Towards human enchantment.

Had I been more thoughtful,
His name might have reflected the
Undeniable dignity that accompanies him;
Counterpoint to the unruly arrangement
Of head feathers; the distinctive attribute that
Lends a sometimes proud, sometimes wretched
But always surprisingly charming quality to
His appearance and inspired debate about
The transmission of physical traits from parent
To progeny and finally, a search for information
Regarding the expected lifespan of blackbirds.

Kenya, goodbye

In those fraught moments
between staying and leaving,
breathing in that last air,
committing to heart forever
noises, smells, colours, faces
life dares me to let go.

In evening’s polished question
Lie the dark remains
Of unaccounted nothings
And a silent loud refrain.

Just now. . .half drunk.

Wow
Up to
Now!!

@Blondesign I really like the phrase evening’s polished question something waiting in the wings but never laid bare, never exposed, still shiny and unspoken

From famished faces gaze
Intricate possibilities
Of shimmering purpose
Favorably denied.

@Adagio thanks. you got pretty wurds to

@jeanna is. She’s good. I’ve wrote some, but it’s mostly garbage.

I’m in a creative writing class now and our assignments are all poetry. I like it a lot, maybe I’ll post some of my stuff in this thread

I used to fill notebooks with poetry about 10 years ago, but only wrote sporadically after that, perhaps 1 or 2 a year. I haven’t written anything in about 3–4 years now. I stopped mostly because I realized I didn’t have much of a talent for poetry; writing them was useful for the catharsis that came with it, I guess. I think this might be the last one I wrote:

Mr. Twilight

Blank leaves of grass are my labor of love,
Words in succession from ear to ear,
A fluid train with no last stop:
The ride goes on while I try to recall
Where I got off

I’m the in-between man:
Mr. Twilight.
If you watch me play,
You’ll surely see me fade.

Unhealthy to sing of myself
Because of the rust of lust.
Obsession in my thoughts
Like an anvil on a chain.
Gray matter growing grayer,
I’ve never been wetter.

It’s the in-between hand,
Mr. Twilight:
The Purple man.
Will you leave? Will you stay?
There’s another hand to play…

“Just push over that wall,”
I used to say,
“He’s not a man, you can move him.”
I mix them up, nowadays.
The flipped-coin limitations
Are the friction of this mortal plane.

You can float in-between,
Mr. Twilight,
The Purple Span.
I won’t die with you if you bleed
But I guess I’ll wash your stain.

I do have a caution about posting your work here. Two, actually. One is that it can be an anonymity buster. The other is that your work is unprotected.

drdoombot's avatar

@Jeruba I thought about your first point momentarily, then realized my work probably isn’t publishable, so my name won’t ever be associated with it. And if that’s the case, the second point becomes moot.

whatthefluther's avatar

@Jeruba is right on. The T&Cs clearly state: “Any content posted on this site may be used by Fluther for any purpose.“A copyright attorney could best address this, but I would think it prudent to protect your material prior to sharing it. We often post links to protected material which if used by fluther, I would think, would require their identification and acknowledgement of the source and its protection and I would think the same would apply to one’s previously protected work, but again, a copyright attorney could best address this issue. But fluther.com would not be the only concern. Anyone could use your work and claim it as their own and protect it as such.

As a matter of fact, I must run. I’m stealing @Blondesjon ‘s half drunk laden posts to call my own…..nah, just kidding (tho they are quite good, which comes as no surprise considering he is a multi-talented, true renaissance drunk, who I happen to lurve and respect very much).

See ya….Gary/wtf

@drdoombot I like Mr. Twilight a lot… nice work.

Walking down the street of life
I took the wrong turns once or twice

Lost my way from my friends
Ran smack into a few dead ends

Running from shadows
Chasing dreams
Waiting till those lights turn green

Haunted by memories of long ago
I work for some cash
Then I’m back on the road

Jeruba's avatar

@drdoombot, would you consider it moot if you saw your work published under someone else’s name? And if to reclaim your rights of authorship you had to prove that it was you who posted it here?

that one is on me boys. if ya make a buck buy me a beer.

whatthefluther's avatar

@Blondesjon…I believe you have the process reversed. I already bought you the beer, did I not? Therefore, that one is all mine!? See ya….Gary/wtf
PS: Good to hear you have Andrew lined up to guest on your next show. Its about time some credibility was injected into what you call the RandomAssRadio show. Try not to destroy the good man. Reinforce that with Andy, as well. Peace!

I used to write a fair bit, but haven’t in the last 5 or 6 years. It’s a sad fact, but with luck the upcoming birth in my family will inspire something. I always like finding new modern poets, so let me know if there are any that really get you guys going. Once that I would like to share is James Tate. http://www.americanpoems.com/poets/jamestate/

lloydbird's avatar

@Jeruba Might a graffiti equivalent for poetry be of use here?

Jeruba's avatar

@lloydbird, I don’t understand the question.

Naturally anyone is free to post his or her work. I just sounded a caution that some might want to consider.

lloydbird's avatar

@Jeruba “I just sounded a caution that some might want to consider.”
And rightly so. That point is by no means under question, here.
The point, that I was fumblingly trying to make, is whether poetry could have a ‘freely given’ manifestation. Somewhat in the way that graffiti has.

drdoombot's avatar

@Jeruba While I appreciate the kind thought, I doubt anyone would want to publish that particular poem.

They returned to the woods
From whence they came
Two women or spirits
Sometimes they appear the same

Neither tried to point a finger
Or place the blame
For the state of their existence
Nor the depth of their pain

They gave a forlorn look
But then refrained
And returned to the woods
From whence they came
