Thinking about trying it out, but don’t want to put a lot of money into something that sucks as bad as Vista!

Nothing can be as bad as vista , not even falling into a vat of rotting horse crap is that bad .
I’m not answering the title Q, but rather addressing your concern about money. If you have or you know someone who has a .edu email address (undergrad/grad students), then you can get an upgrade to Win7 for just 30$. Go here for more info.
I’m using the Windows 7 RC right now (and have been for months now). I was preparing myself for a switch to Ubuntu because I knew I would eventually have to give up my beloved XP, but I’m really loving Windows 7. It runs pretty light (compared to Vista) and looks very pretty. The feature I enjoy most is the new taskbar (which is better than the Apple dock), including the thumbnail previews of your open windows. I find that the majority of my favorite applications and devices continue to work in Win7 (except for one beloved, but old, scanner). The XP virtualization is pretty neat. It runs better than other virtual machine of XP that I’ve run, but it’s still a little bit slow.
In my opinion, it’s definitely worth trying, and probably worth buying as well.
I’ve tried the Release Candidate of Windows 7 and it’s easy to use and has a wonderful user interface.
Vista does not suck! It had a lot of bugs before its Service Pack 1, but this isn’t the case anymore.

No, you are right, it does not suck. It would need a massive improvement before it could rise to a merely “sucks” level. Vista is way below “sucking”.
Even Microsoft has admitted that it was a failure – after non-stop bad reviews and tens of millions of customer complaints. MS even smoothed the way for people and companies wishing to step back to XP-Pro.
Vista, like XP-Pro ect., is fine if used within their clearly stated limitations. Most of the problems are with people without IT skill doing things that they shouldn’t. The problem is that is where the Microsoft market lies – non-professional users. From that POV – Vista sucks.
I have NEVER had a Blue Screen on XP, never had a Virus/Trojan problem, but also, I have never run software that wasn’t approved – as so many people do. My XP machines run as fast as the day they were set-up. But I manage my own Group Policies, only install software that doesn’t do nasty things and do regular housekeeping.
My problem with Vista was with compatibility with existing XP designed software – many conflicts.
(I still much prefer my Macs.)
I literally just started using windows seven, I just got it yesterday so I don’t have much knowledge about it, but I do like it more than vista.
@PnL My college had a special deal that students could get it even cheaper.
I think the reasoning behind the discounts for students is that microsoft’s biggest asset is that people know how to use their products, and by giving discounts to students, they are just making sure that this continues.
I tried the beta out a long time ago in VMware Fusion on my Mac for about 5 minutes. I didn’t hate it right away, so that’s a good sign.
I’m using it right now and loving it. I would say that it’s well worth it. If you have any specific questions, please let me know.
I believe when it comes out I will switch to it! Thanks to all and Lurve!
i was wondering what that blue screen thing is….
@trailsillustrated i was wondering what that blue screen thing is….
The Microsoft BSOD Blue Screen of Death. When MS fails the screen turns blue and the system freezes.
See this for today’s opnion on Windows 7.
not my whole screen but like if i’m writing an email or on here or whatever, everything will turn blue and I have to mouse away and click to turn it normal again- very annoying- I have a coupon somewhere for windows 7 but how much is it usd?
That may be a graphics hitch. See about upgrading your graphics drivers.
Since I put Window 7 on my Computer. I have duplicate email on my two emails that come from verizon. I log on through MSN.
Microsoft says, it is Verizon and Verizon says it is not. It is simply annoying.
