Why can't the Olympics be in the same place every year?
I know each country wants to host the games, but we build absurdly massive stadiums ever two years that see about two weeks worth of use. Its as if multi-billion dollar stadiums are disposable. Yeah its unfair to give the same country the Olympics each year, but I think thats something we need to get over (or give the games to Antartica or the Vatican?)
How about we build a super awesome summer olympic stadium and a mega awesome winter stadium in two different countries and use them for every Olympics?(maybe we could give them back to Greece?) That way we wouldn’t have to displace tons of civilians every time a new city gets it, nor would there be all the environmental damage nor the financial loss from building a new one every two years.

Well, they are not wasted. They are used after the olympics. It’s a boost for the city and the area around it. It’s mostly win all around.
I wonder that same thing.
I really never looked into it, though. Do they reuse the stadiums for other things? You know, other sports or big events.

Two years?
Addendum:
The absurdly massive stadiums seem to be mostly for the summer Olympics – the Winter aren’t so over the top.
@DarkScribe yes, 2 years. Winter will be 2010, summer 2012, winter 2014 ect…..
because the Olympics aren’t held every year.
If they were in the same city every year, who would travel and see them? That’s the fun of the Olympics. You travel every year, to different places. Who would want to go to the same place over and over?
Take them back to Mount Olympus and leave them there.
The Olympics are only held once every four years, so it is not possible to have them in the same city every year.
There are two parts to the Olympics, the summer games and the winter games, and they are rarely held in the same place.
The main reason for the moving around is financial. It is very financially lucrative to have the Olympics in your city, because all the people who come spend enough money to make up for all the expensive preparations. Cities go way overboard bidding for the Olympics to be held in their town.
Before this “bidding” (actually bribing) started, they were held in Athens every four years.
What fun would that be? Why not eat at the same restaurant every night too?
It’s an interesting question. I doubt the answer is nearly as interesting. My bet is that the IIOC and a whole lot of other people, including governments, get huge rewards every four years, whether monetary or in terms of prestige.
Beijing could not have bought that entrance into the World community for any sum of money. It was a “Get Out Of Tienanmin Free” card.
One can go back to the 1936 Olympics, and the propaganda triumph they were for Hitler to see why we won’t be seeing the Olympics remain in one place any time soon.
Thats like saying “Why dont we go to the same town every year for family vacation?”
because that would be boring. boring boring boring boring boring.
It would be biased to have them in the same place every year. Only that nation would get to practice in the facilities where the games were going to be held. And every Games! That would be totally unfair.
Unless it was Greece, I guess, since they invented them and all.
im kind of shocked that my answer got modded up there. I wasnt aware i wrote anything offensive or against guidelines….
@Ivan stfu lol
you get a GA for making me smile. :)
@uberbatman Maybe it sounded like a joke answer instead of being helpful. I believe you said “boring” and it might have sounded like it was a comment about the question, instead of a legitimate answer.
i suppose so, i just meant that itd be horribly boring. Oh well, i got 7 GAs out of it before modded….
I suggest building a self-sufficient marine colony. Many scientists have suggested this. If designed as a huge ship it could travel the world oceans and reach most countries. The unfairness is limited to the 44 landlocked countries.
that would be bad ass mattbrowne.
