Male singers (classic rock and present day) who had/has the best pipes in your opinion?

Asked by Jude (32204points) October 5th, 2009

Just saw the new(ish) guy that’s fronting Journey. He’s okay, but, no Steve Perry.

If you had to pick just one, who would it be.

I like Freddie.

David Coverdale. In terms of archetypal classic rock. Peerless.
And I’m no major fan!

When it comes to male singers I like a bit of gravel in the voice. Rod Stewart, Bruce Springsteen and Chris Rea all have voices that I love to listen to.

I lurve Joe Cocker. That’s an amazing voice. Bill Withers is pretty amazing, too.

Bruce Dickinson.

Jeff Buckley

Sorry. A lot of them are rather technically and emotionally proficient. And someone already said Roy Orbison.

Orbison.

Hm. I didn’t change my mind since this question was asked last week.

If you had to pick just ONE.

I’m a stickler for rules. Sometimes.

Hmm, I can read, as can everyone else!

I’m going to have to cheat a little and pick two that I can’t split. Eric Clayton from Saviour Machine, and Ville Valo from H.I.M. (His Infernal Majesty).

Frank Sinatra

I’m saying three, but as a collective singing together. Not separately at all.

Chad Urmston, Pete Heimbold, and Brad Corrigan of the band Dispatch.

evegrimm's avatar

I’m gonna have to go with @YARNLADY: Frank Sinatra.

(And Bing Crosby, and—well, any of the old greats.)

Paul McCartney or James Taylor

just one?! |:
i think adam green’s voice is incredible, but on some albums more than others. i feel like i’m breaking an unspoken rule by naming someone who isn’t classic or like, world renowned, but i love it.

runners up: buddy holly, dean martin, m. ward, rufus wainwright

Classic rockers:

Ronny Dio has a great voice. So does the singer of Iron Maiden (the guy who came on for the 3rd album and onwards… Bruce Dickinson, I think?).

Modern rockers:

My favorite current rock vocalist is Serj Tankian. Jonathan Davis from Korn has quite amazing range as well.

And though he’s no major voice talent, I just love the gravelly sound of Gavin Rossdale’s voice.

@drdoombot Ronny Dio is great too, Holy Diver is a brilliant album.

Paul McCartney, Roger Daltry, and Jim Morrison.

JONESGH's avatar

@sjmc1989 Yay! Agreed, they tend to reinvent themselves without losing the roots that make them who they are.
