How do I get the burners on my stove to stop smoking?

Asked by goose756 (655points) October 6th, 2009

The smoke seems to be coming from the burners themselves and I’m wondering what the best way to clean them would be? I’ve tried soaking the burners and drip pans in soapy water and scrubbing them but they still smoke. What is on them and how do I get it off?!

Clean them. Unless there is oil or fat on them they cannot smoke. Perhaps try an oven cleaner?

Are you sure that it is the burners, and not the drip tray or the area beneath it that is smoking

you need to tell those burners to cut it out and get with the program, @DarkScribe said they can’t smoke so I suggest you tell them to stop.

Have you tried scrubbing them with an SOS pad and some oven cleaner?

I would consider looking for replacements. Yours seem to have worn out.

Could it be gunk dripped below the burner and drip pan on the top of the oven? I have had tons of stuff drip onto it and that starts smoking. It will get it hot enough. Every drip pan I have seen has a hole in the bottom. I usually wrap ours in foil for easier cleaning.

If none of the above work, get them as clean as you can, turn on the exhaust fan and burn off whatever residue is on them.

Order out.
@patg7590 It’s not enough to just tell them to stop. Maybe some “tough love” is in order; like an intervention.

stop buying them cigarettes, and buy them some gum instead.

It is an electric range? I believe that oven cleaner will damage the electrical elements.

I would do as @DrBill suggests regarding burning off what ever it is.

(Come on. You were all thinking it.)

@Dog yes it is an electric range. @johnpowell I know it isn’t coming from the drip pans those are brand new and I can see the smoke just from the burners. @DrBill Maybe I will try burning it off now…. lets see what happens!

@goose756 Be careful – can’t you just unplug them and buy new? It might be safer.

Mine smoke for a while even after they are cleaned. I think the cleaning products themselves leave a residue that needs to burn off. So that is what I would try, turn them on high and let them burn until they stop smoking.

And yes I was going to say stop buying them cigs but you all up there beat me to it

Dammit! @AstroChuck beat me to the Nicorette joke!
