Where is a good place to go camping this weekend near San Francisco?

Asked by sfgal (283points) October 8th, 2009

Thinking of doing a one-night camping trip, somewhere close to San Francisco. I called Point Reyes and all the campsites were reserved. Is there anywhere else really beautiful that is less than 1.5 hours from San Francisco where I can still get a camping reservation for Saturday night? I would prefer to find a place where there is a short hike in – so it isn’t car camping, but we’d only have to backpack in a few miles and not hike all day. Suggestions?

Angel Island is really fun to camp on, but the spots fill up fast and the ferry makes things a little complicated.

Otherwise head south to Castle Rock. It’s beautiful and the sites are first come.

I would try some spots near Bodega Bay (north of SF). It’s really beautiful on the northern coast, but also pretty chili. Bundle up. Hope you find something!

It’s going to be impossible to find anything on the coast, because this is the beginning of fleet week, and two other major events are taking place this weekend.

You could try Mt Diablo State Park.

Near Monterey.

@Marina I think that one is full also. Any of the public campground with reservation systems on the coast are full. It’s a great place to go if you plan far enough ahead.

Samuel P. Taylor State Park. Not on the shore, but a nice campsite under the trees and near Muir Woods and Pt. Reyes for day trips.
