Pay my husband to do it for you ;0) That’s what I did! ;)

Actually, the instructions are pretty simple that even I a “technotard” like you can do it. I’ve had to reset the router a few times & I can reboot my system, too.

Is your husband willing to travel from Wisconsin to my home in Southwestern, Ontario? ;-)

@jmah I am! I’d love to visit Canada.

Do you have a wireless router already?

Do you have a wireless router? How do you connect now? This is like needle in a haystack with the info we have.

I’m moving at the end of Nov., and where I will be moving to doesn’t have anything set up, as of yet.

You need a broadband provider, to get the basic signal. You need an “Access Point” or, preferably, a Router, to distribute the signal if you are using more than one wi-fi equipped computer, and you need to make each of your computers wi-fi capable by installing a card or USB device or some other device that is capable of communicating with the router.

You then need to provide the router with a secure method of allowing computers to connect, so that intruders cannot disturb your network, and you need to teach each computer the magic phrase which will allow it to access the router in order to get a network ip address.

So, pick up a wireless router, and get broadband internet connection. Awesome. :)

@jmah It really isn’t too difficult. Are you using a laptop or a desktop? I ask because my laptop & our BB already have wi-fi capability.

You might wish to consider purchasing a router which is equipped for the 802.11 n protocol which has just recently become standard, because your devices will connect at higher speeds, and you will get more signal coverage, but remember, the computers must be configured for “n” also, in order to take advantage of this. Also, good routers these days are capable of broadcasting on two different bands to minimize interference from other devices.

@pdworkin Thanks a bunch for the info!

@jmah What type of Internet connection will you have at your new place? (asks my husband who just came home)

Jude's avatar

High-speed cable.

@jmah Then, follow the quick start “how to” instructions I linked above after you purchase a wi-fi router. Whatever wireless security settings you set up on the router, use those on your laptop when you connect to the wireless network.

Write me in Nov if you need further assistance. I can help walk you thru it in layman’s (tard;) terms.

@SpatzieLover Fabulous! I’ll let you know how I do! Thanks!

Read the manual and follow the instructions. They are pretty straight forward.
