Would you be a (female) delivery driver?

I have a friend who did this, but otherwise I hardly ever see or hear of female delivery drivers. I’ve only once seen a female cab driver, but she would only pick up other women customers. I’m really thinking of taking this job (I’m in college, they make good money), but it blows that safety would be a big issue in a way it might not be for a guy. I know there are plenty of dangers that guys face, like being on the road all the time and robberies. Would you ever do this job?

I was a delivery driver for a place that sold subs, just like Subway and I have to say I’ve seen some of the creepiest people doing deliveries. But at the end of the day I had a good time. People tip well and now I get lost less because I used to deliver!
No, I don’t think I could go through with the surgery.
I know several female drivers. Some drive semis, some drive straight trucks, some drive for UPS or FED EX or whatever, and I see more and more delivery drivers that are female all the time. Even the pizza places have female drivers.
There is one, who must be in her 60s, a small woman named Irene, that drives a semi and pulls a 53 ft van trailer all over the US. She probably doesn’t weigh much more than a popcorn fart, but she drives a vehicle that weighs 80,000 lbs.
i was a delivery driver at a sub shop too – jimmy johns. I delivered until 3 am on saturday nights in a very drunk college town carrying around $300—$400 cash at times… and it was a pretty good time i must say. you do meet some weird people sometimes but I guess it depends on your area and if you are comfortable with it.
i think it could be fun. i was just thinking about applying to deliver pizza…they are always hiring where i live. but my car is not extremely reliable…still though, could be interesting!
They have to be healthy and very strong. I had a roommate once who worked for UPS and she loved it.
I would hazard that close to half the regular delivery drivers that we use are female. There are certainly a lot of female taxi drivers here (Australia). Of late many of the union disputes involving truckers have “working” female driver/owners as spokespersons. It isn’t as much of a man’s world as it used to be. :)
No. I can’t drive. Even if I could, I’m not much interested in driving. But if that’s what you want to do, go for it!
I was a parts driver out in Ut, and there were a whole bunch of female drivers. I think that there were 20 of us from the Wasatch front, and mabey 10 guys. I personally had a lot of fun, cause I got to basically do whatever I wanted as long as I delivered the parts in a timely manner, I can’t tell you how many times I would go up to the mountains, and hang out with one of the other drivers from another dealership.
I personally wouldn’t feel safe in many of the areas near where I live. So I guess I’d say it depends on how you feel about the areas you’d be delivering to. I mean, I feel that I’d be more likely to get robbed delivering in some areas of NYC than in Collegeville Pennsylvania. Perhaps it would be a good idea to take some sort of self-defense class?
About half of our Pizza Guys are actually Pizza Gals, so I guess there isn’t much problem in our area. I don’t see many UPS or FedEx females, but I suspect it may have to do with upper body strength.
I was a female delivery driver in Miami for a while. I picked up and delivered microfilm records for banks at night. It never bothered me.
I wouldn’t drive a semi or a long-distance truck as a woman, being that I’ve heard of some pretty bad things happening at truck stops to women truckers, but I’d definitely do local delivery work. Cab driving, too, seems like it would be pretty safe – you’re hooked up to a speaker system at all times, right?
No, I don’t think so. I wouldn’t feel safe.
I work in a nationwide bio-medical lab, and we employ several femal drivers. They go to doctor’s offices and pick up specimens to be tested in the lab. I considered doing this myself for awhile, but I like my indoor job better. I wouldn’t want to get in and out of the car several times a day in inclement weather.
