How do you get someone to read an article online without them knowing how they got to it?

Asked by rhodes54 (415points) October 9th, 2009

It could be something simple like advice or tips you think they could use and there’s no way they’d find it on their own BUT you don’t want them to know it came from you.

Create a fake name and email account on googlemail or yahoomail and send the link.

You could send the email to all your contacts or more than just that one person. Attatch a note with the email explaining some generic reason why you are sending it out to everyone.

If this person is friends with you on Facebook, you could post the article in a public manner, not singling out “the” person.

Probably won’t work. If I get an email or instant message or text or whatever from an unknown email/username/number/etc I almost never pay it the slightest attention. Other methods as mentioned by @valdasta are good to expose the person to the article but are certainly less sure ways to get it read by the specific person than by making yourself known.

You could tell them you were sending them a link for a specific article in the same site, be descriptive enough so that it can be found and believed, and copy the real one instead. Then claim ignorance and befuddlement when brought up and send the real link. You could even follow up and say you copied yourself to try the link and found it was wrong here is the real one. I would make sure to choose a fake article about something you can discuss.

If I get an anonymous mail with a link, I never open it, no matter how curious I am.

I suppose you could try printing it out and putting it in an envelope with his or her name on it. Oh yeah. Then pop it in the mailbox. You might want to get someone else to write the person’s name on the envelope, though.

As proven in the majority of previous postings, most people ignore any messages sent to numerous ppl. or anonymously. Worse yet, those that aren’t targeted that get the message might think it is meant for them.

It would be helpful if you could provide more specific information on what it is you want to get across to this person. And there are some situations that, no matter what your intent is, it is best not to intervene. Sometimes, though, it can work like a charm, if delivered effectively. If you wish, I can tell you a story on how “Mr. Stinky” found out that he had a bad case of BO. It has a happy ending.
