Why does my Siamese poo outside his box?

Asked by Jaybee (220points) October 9th, 2009 from iPhone

Why does my male Siamese cat like to poo right outside his box? I’ve tried every remedy that I could Find based on advice, research, etc. But he still poos right outside the box on the tile floor. Strangly he then pretents that there is phantom-sand all around his poo & then proceeds to diligently cover the poo with sand (sand that’s not there…) very strange. Tried all the usual remedied, different sands, different style of boxes… Can someone please lend any insight to this problem I’m having. I would appreciate any advice.

Have you taken him to the vet? Our cat had this issue, and it turned out that he had a worm problem.

I had a similar experience as @zephyr826 – cats will act out like that often because of illness, discomfort, and so on.

Oh I hadn’t even thought about that. He has been to the vet though and has had complete checkup but they never mentioned any problems other than ear fungus. This was a while back and it’s all gone. It never occurred to me mention this to my vet that he is pooing outside his box. And now that I think about he should’ve been the first person to tell.
He may have an illness afterall. I know that when I watch him I can tell that he would prefer to do it in the box because he appears to be vacilating between the box and the floor. The floor wins but he doesn’t look happy about it each time. And (forgot to mention) he never tinkles outside the box. This is just a poo issue.
I want to thank everyone for the advice. I will call his vet today.

Sometimes cats will do this if the litter box isn’t cleaned often enough. If you think that may be the case, you can try cleaning it more often. Is this an elderly cat we are talking about?

@scamp is correct. Often cats prefer a tidy litter box. Some prefer 2 litter boxes…one for #1 & another for #2.

The box gets clean every two day like clockwork. That was one of the things I’ve been diligent about. He is a young cat. Only 18 months old. For a while I had two litter boxes because I was briefly convinced that he didn’t enjoy sharing the box with our other cat who is only 8 days younger than he is. I got them together when they were 3 months old so they’ve grown up together and get along beautifully. So, the two litter box plan didn’t work as he just kept doing it outside the box except we now had two boxes to clean every other day. I’ve made an appointment today for the vet to have him checked out. I sure hope this problem will find a solution.

@Jaybee With two cats, you actually need three litter boxes for added tidiness!

If he’s always done this, and has had regular veterinary checkups, he may just not have the box figured out. The phantom sand thing I can’t explain, but I have a cat that does not cover. She poops in the box just fine (most of the time) and then proceeds to step out of the box and kick phantom sand onto her poop. Always has.

I agree with SpatzieLover. I have two cats and 3 litter boxes, and I clean them daily. You may want to get an extra one and clean them daily as well. Cats are not usually fond of sharing their litter boxes. If your other cat doesn’t cover.. you may have you answer!

If a cat smells a hint of another cats ‘business’, they can become pretty finicky and refuse to use the box. so get another box, clean them daily, and see if that doesn’t solve your problem. Give it a week or so before you decide if this solution is pass or fail tho. Old habits die hard! Good luck with this.

Free thinking cat. Shits outside the box.

Because cats are dicks.

I’ve had cats perch on the edge of the box… they obviously think they’re all the way in, but their butt is hanging out over the floor. The kind of litterbox with a snap-on rim all the way around worked for me, & I would think a covered litter box would work too. If the poo is consistently right next to the box, I’d bet your cat is a ‘percher’.
