What do you think of vehicles that are "murdered out"?

Asked by perplexed82 (288points) October 9th, 2009

I have been seeing more and more of these lately; modded vehicles with blacked out tail lights, darkly tinted windows, black rims/wheels, black gloss or matte paint. It is pretty common to economy cars like Hondas, Mazdas, etc.
Here is an example. http://tinypic.com/r/nyxqhj/4

Makes me wonder what they must be doing in the back seat to need tinted windows.

@eponymoushipster Well you know what they say about us backward folk in Texas who live under rocks in accord to the rest of the world. I’ve only noticed this since moving to Houston from Austin about one year ago.

the first two would be illegal in germany.

They bother me. They make me think of dangerous people—people with guns—criminals. I am disturbed by anyone who hides their face—from people wearing veils to those with masks to those who black out their vehicles. You never know who is behind the veil, and you have no idea why they are hiding.

You have those buses that movie and rock stars use. But who knows who is really there? It all bothers me to one degree or another.

@perplexed82 yes, that’s true. i lived in Texas for a year and a half, and it is a very sad, strange, backwards place. that’s probably why, if you cruise down Westheimer on a Friday or Saturday night, you’ll see all these kinds of cars.

According to one website, “pimped out” cars were a fad of the early 2000s along with Razor scooters, Pokemon, boybands, and spiky short hair. What an age…I loved those years. My childhood. :)

As for the cars, I don’t mind them unless they’re really tacky-looking. When I see those spinning rims I can’t help but think lower-class people trying to look all “wealthy” but it’s really just tacky as all get out. This “murdered out” style seems less showy than the usual “pimped out” type.

@ragingloli Germany isn’t the only place they’d be illegal. Many states in the U.S. ban darkly tinted front windows, but it doesn’t seem to stop anyone. Americans seem loathe to see any of their auto safety rules actually enforced. I think anything that obscures your taillights or turn signals is probably illegal everywhere, if not it should be. Similarly, obscuring your license plate is illegal in some states at least, yet people have scratched up clear covers you can’t see through and frames that block key information. Apparently no one tickets them for these things. No as for appearance, I think the all black look is pretty cool. Now if the front windows are not heavily tinted and the blacked out taillights show up as well when they are lighted as other taillights, then I’d be fine with the whole thing.

they look cool if they are uniform and there are 3 or more together

otherwise, its just lazyness. The could have spent that money making a more visually appealing car.

Dependant on the car, i generally like the look.

Ive considered doing it to my 88 mustang.

@uberbatman Not flat black- it would not compliment the stealth awesomeness of your 5.0. Just my opinion of course.

I’m not a car person (for me they’re for utility, not vanity), but it’s just another form of accessory. A way to be noticed. The question is, why do these people want to be noticed in this way and does it have a larger meaning? Maybe, maybe not.

I live in Houston and see a number of vehicles with this look; from large F-150 trucks (and up) to obvious gov’t vehicles… it seems to be catching on in that way.

I’m not really sure about this, but I think tinted windows are illegal in Holland (or used to be for a long while). The motivation for this comes down to safety and communication between a bicyclist (which we have a lot of) and the car driver. With tinted windows the bicyclist wouldn’t be able to tell if the driver saw him/her.

All sorts of folks, especially younger males, have long decorated or “upgraded” their vehicles in various ways considered to be unsightly to older or more conservative members of society. This is one of the current fads, as hot rods were when I was younger. Much of the look comes from a desire to emulate celebrities, who have dark windows to hide from the paparazzi, or to copy movies such as the several Fast & Furious films.

However, I do believe that “privacy tint” as it is called is only legal in Texas on the back windows (see this for the details) so those with really dark windows risk getting citations unless they have a medical exemption.

In any case, it is a style and like most styles it will eventually pass.

i like the way it looks. maybe a little more silver on the wheels but its sleek and nice.

@hiphiphopflipflapflop heh!

I see the whole thing like someone who has mega-collagened her lips. It first elicits a little laugh or roll of the eyes, then you feel sorry (is it a self-esteem thing? lack of intellect?), then you wonder how much money they spent to look so…“interesting.”
All in about a ten second time frame.
