A dude ranch is a guest ranch, where you can stay and live ranch life; in contrast to a ranch, where people make their living.
OR
It’s a ranch where they – instead of cows – keep men, grazing the fields, dressed in loose t-shirts and the occasional cap who instead of “Moo”, go “Whoa”. Several types of dudes are kept. Common are the southern dude # and the western #. Though they do interbreed.
It takes a willingness to join the hospitality business to turn a regular ranch nto a dude ranch.
A working ranch is in the business of raising animals. It could be horses, sheep or cows or other animals (goats, llamas, etc.)
A dude ranch is usually no longer a working ranch (although some still are) in which people come for vacation to experience the western cowboy lifestyle with trail rides, campfires, cowboy cooking, etc.
A working ranch is for the professionals. A dude ranch is for the amateurs who want to see what being a cowboy is like for a few days before going back home to their real life.
Sometimes a working ranch can also be a dude ranch, but generally the two operations are kept quite separate. Also, a working ranch may need just a bunkhouse and perhaps a cookhouse or dining hall for the workers, but a dude ranch needs what is in essence hotel accommodations for the city slickers.
Yes, a “dude” originally meant an urban male who dressed like a dandy and usually never left the big city. Of course, such a man was unused to the ways of frontier life. This man here, for example, once upon a time was King of the Dudes. I don’t think that that chap would know a pair of chaps if someone tied them round his naked arse.
Obviously you’d only find a dude ranch in West Hollywood, Provincetown or The Village.~
There’s Regular Ranch, Dude Ranch and now New Dude Ranch, with cheese.
anyone remember Hey Dude on Nickelodeon back in the early 90s? that was a dude ranch.
