Men: where do you carry your wallet?

Asked by gussnarp (2835points) October 12th, 2009

So this is to be the first of two questions inspired by a new pair of dress pants I just bought at the Gap Outlet for $7. I have always carried my wallet in my left, back pocket. These pants have a button closure on the right, back pocket, but none on the left. The left pocket was also stitched shut like a new blazer pocket and I had to open it up to put my wallet in. I have also noticed that some shorts with only one back pocket have it on the right. So, am I defying tradition and wearing my wallet on the wrong side? Should I try to change my 30-some year habit? If the right pocket is traditional, why?

it’s actually recommended that you carry your wallet in a pocket other than the back pocket as it can contribute to back pain over time. When you sit, and you sit on the wallet, you’re slightly off balance, sometimes causing back pain.

My best guess about the right pocket is because the majority of people are right-handed.

Front left pocket.
I’ve tried it in a back pocket. Too damn uncomfortable.
Pen and pencil also go in front left. Cellphone goes in front right. Keys go in the left cargo pocket if it exists, otherwise the front right.

I say screw tradition. Do what’s best.
@poofandmonk My best guess about the right pocket is because the majority of people are right-handed. That would make a lot of sense. I’m left-handed by the way!

Right hip pocket unless I am wearing a suit, then it is vest pocket.

Mostly I just use a leather case on my BlackBerry that case a credit card pocket and a small pocket for folded notes. That lets me carry a credit card, an ID card and a licence. All I really need. The BlackBerry sits in a pants pocket, not back discomfort possible.

@poofandmook I had a friend whose doctor told him his wallet was causing his back pain. I tried switching to front pocket at the time, but just couldn’t do it. Too weird.

Wallet always in front left, cellphone and keys in front right. Makes it borderline impossible for my wallet to get lifted, and sitting is easier. No one wants to carry a Costanza brick around. I’m thinking of getting a Koyono Slimmy

Wherever makes the most sense. This is usually my right hip pocket. But sometimes needs change, and it ends up in my jacket pocket (in the city) or in my bag (when dancing).

Front right pocket.

Actually, for the full break down of stuff-in-pockets:

Front Right Pocket: Wallet. Pens. Sometimes a tiny planner. Pocket-in-pocket: My engagement ring if I am doing something hand-gross-making. Sometimes an IKEA allen wrench.

Front Left Pocket: Keys. Cell Phone

Rear right pocket.

Carrying:
– drivers license
– 6 various plastic cards (like credit & debit cards)
– social security card
– 3 frequent buyer cards
– 2 insurance cards
– student pilots license (expired)
– American Red Cross donation card
– voter registration card
– 2 receipts
– cash

Approximate dimensions (no ruler handy):
– 4.5 inches long
– 2.5 inches wide
– 1.0 inch deep

Were I to convert to a front-pocket wallet, I’d hafta lose some stuff and possibly just switch to a money clip.

BTW, I’m right-handed and yet wear my watch on my right wrist.

So, defy convention. You ain’t hurtin’ nothing.

Back right pocket.

P.S. Bi-folds rule and tri-folds drool!

Switches between my right hip pocket (most often), left hip pocket, and my sweatshirt pocket. I don’t think I’ve ever put anything in my back pockets.

When I wear basketball shorts, it’s inconvenient because any kind of running is near impossible and it sucks when I’m riding a bike because it seems like everything is going to fall out. Sometimes I wish I had a purse…

And there’s no “right” side to put it in; right-handed people are more likely to put it on the right and there are more right-handed people, therefore more people put the wallet in the right-hand pocket.

Bill folds are where it’s at.
You can put it in your front pocket so you’re not sitting on it, and it makes you less likely to be pickpocketed.

My husband puts his in his back right pocket. My wallet is too big to be put into a pocket, and I don’t have a purse…so I put the essentials in my pocket (ID, debit card, sometimes some money)

I stopped using a wallet a long time ago.
I have a money clip, for a couple of cards and my ID.

Right handed. Back left pocket. I think I do this because it’s likely that I’ll be doing something or holding something with my right hand… and so it would be easier to take my wallet out with my left hand. But that’s just a guess, it could just be the comfort-factor.

Wallet in the right front. Keys, cell in the left front. I’ve worn them this way for 15 years. Once I went the better part of the day thinking my keys were lost because I mistakenly put them in the wrong pocket.

Front right with my cellphone, change, and pencil. Can’t do back pockets: too uncomfortable.

I switch up my arrangement every time I get a new cellphone. This cellphone is small so it fits with my wallet and the screen would get scratched by my keys in my left pocket. My last cell was a flip phone so I kept it with my keys.

Also, keeping the wallet in the front pocket makes it harder to pickpocket….not that that’s much of a concern nowadays.

Wallet? Who has money these days?

Holy crap, I had no idea you guys have so much stuff in your pockets. Are they Grand Canyon-sized pockets or something? Can you fit a child in there? My goodness.

I guess I’ll diagram my pocket situation:

Front Left: iPod Touch, Pen/Pencil
Front Right: Cell Phone, Chap stick
Back Right: Wallet
Back Left: Empty

I keep my wallet in my right back pocket, my cell phone in my front left, and my knife in my front right along with keys.

I am still constantly amazed that men find it comfortable to sit on their wallets. I carry a cigarette case with my ID, cash, credit cards, and few other cards that I need (the key to my apt is actually a key card) in it, and I’m so glad that I’m not a man. It would be quite uncomfortable to sit on.

Grisaille's avatar

I used to carry it in my right ass pocket when I had a flip wallet. Few years ago I upgraded; I now carry a slimmer, single-piece wallet with a money clip in the front. I carry it in my front left pocket.

gussnarp's avatar

Wow, I really am an anomaly as a left rear pocket wallet man. Since we’ve started laying it out, here’s how my pockets are occupied:
Front left: pocket knife, change
Front right: keys, only keys – anything else gets scratched or tangled up with the keys, so they fly solo.
Right rear: cell phone, handkerchief.
Left rear: wallet.

I find that I don’t actually sit on my cell phone or wallet, they tend to ride more toward the outside of my body.

I’m really amazed at the people with pens and pencils in front pockets. Don’t they poke you when you move or sit down? I used to carry pens in my back pocket, but when all my pants had ink stains I stopped.

mattbrowne's avatar

Front left pocket. In Paris in the metro I even place my left hand on my front left pocket.

My shoe, where else?

growler's avatar

I still wonder if this is just part of a big scheme to find us IRL and more efficiently pick our pockets…seems somewhat impractical.

gussnarp's avatar

@growler You’re right, please be sure to answer my next question: “What is your home address and where are you likely to be found walking in a public place, preferably either alone at night or in a very crowded space like a train station? Also, could you please make your Fluther picture a very clear shot of you face?”

growler's avatar

@gussnarp Yes, certainly can! Just let me add a GPS ankle bracelet and start a Twitter account to post my location every minute.

dabbler's avatar

Some of you guys don’t live in cities do you ? Some of us do… @torch81, @shuttle128 , @gggritso and @mattbrowne (and maybe @wundayatta; shoe?)
Never in the back pocket.

@Allie Yes, Grand Canyon size please! In the pocket with my wallet goes a blues harp. In the other front pocket goes keys, personal mobile phone, company blackberry, loose cash… no children.
