Do you have to wait to have your telephone interview before you can begin receiving unemployment checks?

My daughter has applied for unemployment, and I guess she’s eligible for $200 a week, which she needs desperately (she has two small children) but her phone “interview” isn’t until Nov 2nd. We can’t seem to find a way to get ahold of a real person to ask this question…..Are you guys real people??? (JK!)

I think it depends on what state and country you’re asking about.
Sorry, Dorothy; I’m not in Kansas anymore.
From all accounts, Kansas isn’t in Kansas anymore, either!
@Val123 I think when my husband did this here in Wis, we got the check the week after he submitted his request…I think the phone interview was after that.
The last time I was on unemployment in Texas, everything was done online except for one orientation meeting that I had to attend.
@SpatzieLover Thank you so much…..the red tape and inability to get ahold of someone is SO frustrating!
@mrentropy I’m betting the phone “interview” is something like the orientation you had. Did you start getting checks before the orientation?
@Val123 I don’t think so, but the whole process took a couple of weeks to kick in, anyway. If I remember correctly.
Well, it’s been over a week since she started it, and she’s looking at, what…3 more weeks till Nov 2? Well, may just have to wait! I just hope they can find Kansas.
@Val123 I think this is a case of: every State handles this differently. Here, it’s extremely fast & efficient, unless you’ve been fired for a “reason”...then the process takes a couple of weeks (so I’ve read). The worst thing that happened here was during the height of unemployment…the phone banks were so busy it took some candidates over a week just to begin their process as they kept getting busy signals.
@Val123 Luckily for her, once she gets approved she’ll qualify for an extra 13 weeks of coverage…That should help a bit. I wish your daughter well in finding new employment. It’s tough out there!
It is. It’s awful. I’m looking for work myself. It’s tough. (Hey, I finally got my profile done! :)
Good luck to you in your job search @Val123!
I don’t know when your last job search was, but things have changed quite a bit in the last couple of years. Lots of phone interviews before an actual in person interview…at least that’s what we learned from my husband’s last couple of searches. He’s landed a great one now (fingers crossed that it lasts).
@SpatzieLover It’s just….frustrating. It doesn’t help that we’re in a small town. We might have 5 jobs advertised in the paper, compared to 500 in Wichita….I’d hate to move, but…IDK.
