If you have a knack for poetry, where do you go?

Asked by seventeen123 (428points) October 13th, 2009

I don’t want to go to stupid websites that ask to publish your poem & have you pay for the book to make money off you. Does anyone know what you should do with your poetry if you’re really good at it?

Coffee shops. Poetry slams.

Submit it to a reputable publisher.

Self-Publish a book first. Let others say if it’s good. What @eponymoushipster said.

— Look for a writers’ club in your area or on your campus.
— Read aloud at open mikes.
— Send your poetry to school papers and creative writing magazines.
— Go to the library and look at literary journals.
— Read the list of contests in the back of any issue of Poets & Writers magazine.
— Find other poets and form a critique group.
— Attend a writers’ conference, go to the poetry workshops, and listen and learn.

First find someone with credibility in publishing poetry who agrees that you are “really good at it” and follow their advice. Poetry is the most difficult genre for a writer to achieve commercial success.

@Jeruba @DarkScribe are spot on; poetry is almost impossible – maybe something online? I dunno. The best I got was exactly what you are trying to avoid: I published mine in a collection (after “winning” a contest – I think I was voted best looking author of a poem or something) and then had to buy the books it was published in.

There are sites online that allow you to post poetry to have it critiqued by other writers and readers. Also, there are sites that allow to self-publish a printed book. You could submit some of your work to literary journals as well.

Submit it for local artsy magazines or other such publications, it’s a good way to start and it’s something to add to your CV if you wanted to go further.
