How much caffeine do you take in regularly?

Asked by The_Inquisitor (3166points) October 14th, 2009

I’m just wondering about how much caffeine people take in, and if there are any side-affects to them in the long run.

Anybody who has drank a cup of coffee everyday and then run into any sort of problem years/decades later?

Anymore known, or experienced downsides to coffee that i should know about?

How much caffeine do you take in regularly?... and how much is a ‘good’, or ‘safe’ amount?

(just me being paranoid again… =\, but i loooove coffee and tea!)

A lot. I drink (strong) tea and coffee constantly. The downside is that caffeine is addictive – you need a cup when you wake to avoid a withdrawal headache. Coffee, once considered all bad, is now being touted as an effective anti-oxidant.

1— 15 cups of coffee every 2 weeks.

That’s an awesome question! I have had a cup of coffee once a day since I was fourteen. (Eight years.) My sister, who is a year younger than me, never drinks coffee, as far as I can tell. We started out nearly the same height, or maybe she was an inch taller, but during our teenage/ young adult years she grew to be five inches taller than me. Genetics? Or coffee?...

When I do drink it, I keep it at less than 100mg a day. I’m pregnant, and I need other fluids than caffeine. My fave drink has 85mg’s, and that’s usually what I have every few days.

I drank vast amounts of hot tea and iced tea years ago. The result was I developed a “caffine allergy” that causes my heart to beat off rhythm. You do not want this.

It couldn’t be coffee, I am over six feet and I have always drunk coffee – since about eight years old. (Somebody probably dug holes in the bottom of your shoes when you weren’t looking.)

Not much at all. Last weekend when I had some Irish coffee was the first time I had had any caffeine in a long time. I don’t even really like coffee and so I never have it and I can’t think of anything I have that has caffeine in it.

Zen's avatar

@DarkScribe Yes, but you were genetically predisposed to be slightly over 7 feet tall. Caffeine screwed that up.

I drink one small cup of coffee every Sunday that I go to church. OTOH, my sister used to drink up to 15 cups a day. She is now down to 4 or 5. She developed heart arrhythmias and so was greatly encouraged to cut down.

Do you mean I missed out on a basketball career because of coffee? Thanks – that’s yet another reason to love coffee. ;)

@DarkScribe It’s yet another reason to have a cuppa joe – and then have another round of sex with the missus.

I drink coffee every day. How much…dunno. (It’s enough liquid to fill up a 32 oz cup, but only about half of that is coffee, a quarter or more is water/ice, and the rest is milk.) I don’t usually drink all of that, either. It’s usually enough for two days. So…~16 oz a day?
(Sometimes I have chai instead of coffee, but that’s not often.)

When I have to stay up late (paper, read a book for class), then I make me some strong black tea. (It’s a blend of many different ones, including assam, ceylon, Prince of Wales, PG Tips and some yummy flavored ones.) I drink 6 cups of that, sometimes. Usually less. :P

Otherwise…no energy drinks. They taste odd, to me. I’d rather have some good old-fashioned coffee. <drools>

1 shot of espresso every weekday. For some reason the withdrawal headache doesn’t attack on weekends. It started when I was getting no sleep doing my most recent term paper, and I love the taste of espresso so I just kept it up. I think I need to cut back.

Don’t forget that Coke, Pepsi, energy drinks also contain caffeine. They can prevent the headaches.

4–5 cups a day during the week at work, almost none on the weekends unless someone comes over. I can drink coffee in the evening without it keeping me up. I’m on the other side of 50, and have been doing this for 30+ years with no side effect that I can think of.

I have noticed that certain brands of pre-ground commercial coffee can make me queasy, but that may be because of chemical additives to the coffee. I tend to drink fresh ground.

mcbealer's avatar

the equivalent of 3 shots of espresso per day
sometimes I drink it with skim milk
usually I brew it like regular coffee, and drink it black

so about 300 mg per day

I never liked coffee or tea, I liked my caffeine cold and bubbly as in Cokey Cola! Over the years would drink 1 to 3 cans a day but I gave it up months ago and now only have it when I have a long drive in front of me. Because I have it rarely it really winds me up and keeps me AWAKE AND ALERT!!!

rooeytoo's avatar

I wanted to add that since I gave it up, I sleep better, have more energy and just sort of feel better. Course I gave up sugar at the same time so that could be the reason as well.

nisse's avatar

8 cups/day approximately.
When studying more..

I doubt this is healthy, and i have some adverse effects such as low blood pressure in the mornings (hard to get up), and high blood pressure during daytime. Apart from that i feel fine. But damn, coffee is good, and i figure ill die sometime anyway and i dont feel like going around worrying about everything i put in my mouth.

wildpotato's avatar

@DarkScribe I don’t drink those nasty sugar-flavored beverages. Tea sometimes, but not on weekends. I was guessing it has something to do with my body not expecting the caffeine on those two days because of the routine I’ve gotten into, but I’m not sure how much sense that makes.

Currently near 0. Occasionally I will want a cola with some pizza or something, but I bet that’s not even once a month now. After the baby comes and I’m not breastfeeding, I’ll enjoy some Rooibos or Mate tea a couple times a week. It doesn’t affect me to drink caffeine at all. Nothing noticeable anyway.

I used to drink almost no coffee, but I would drink hot chocolate a lot. Then I switched to mocha, and finally I switched to lattes. Now I drink about four lattes per week, and maybe one cup of coffee, on average per weekend. I think that espresso has about half the caffeine that coffee does, so I guess that amounts to six to seven cups of espresso per week.

Let’s see, two cups of Kona Blend coffee (black) when I wake up. Maybe a caffeinated soda (Pepsi, Mtn Dew, or Barqs) sometime during the day. Chocolate somewhere in there, as it has caffeine in it. Then about four cups of strong Sumatran coffee (with cream and sugar) in the afternoon/evening, and maybe another Mountain Dew or Pepsi later at night.

So about six cups of coffee a day, and 2–3 sodas every few days. That’s about normal for me.

@evelyns_pet_zebra, lurve for Sumatran coffee!

I began drinking coffee at the age of 10, and continued through my 18th year. I used to drink 16–20 oz. drip coffee each morning, but the quantity need escalates, the withdrawals are awful, and the cost on a college budget is a bit prohibitive.

I quit cold in 2007. It’s sometimes harder to stay awake or get up early, but I think I have a better understanding of when I really need rest. I also have dramatically fewer headaches. I feel much better over all.

Obviously can’t avoid the occasional small intake when it’s part of other foods, but I’m certainly not an addict anymore.

Two cups of coffee. No more. Plus green tea.

BraveWarrior's avatar

I drink only decaf (black) tea and decaf green tea due to Symptomatic Mitral Valve Prolapse Syndrome and never drink coffee (grew up with a tea family & never developed a taste for coffee). I do remember, though, that when I went from regular black tea to decaf black tea, I did get a headache from caffeine withdrawal even though I was only drinking about 2 cups a day – I guess I must have been sensitive to the caffeine :)
