Can you tell me what the position of "Transition Coordinator" at a Community College would entail?

Asked by Val123 (12739points) October 15th, 2009

I have an interview for that position, and I’d like to figure out what’s up before I go in. I’m sure, by the title, that it has to do with transitioning HS kids in and graduates out, but does anyone know exactly what that means?
PS. I tried asking the Q earlier, but somehow managed to screw it up and I don’t think it posted.

You are applying for a job that you don’t know basically anything about?

Way to go!

On the only campus that I am currently associated with it involves exchange students and those transferring from other Unis. (They have a very large number of foreign students.)

@DarkScribe I have an interview today. Apparently they feel my skills are suitable for the position. For all I know it’s a simple job that they hung a big title on. I’ve been researching it, can’t find anything on that specific title. Just like I’m sure I wouldn’t find anything on the title of “Special Markets Administrator” which is a position I held for several years. Thanks.

The person fulfilling that function here had to do things like verify credits, check previous student records, arrange outgoing transfers – stuff like that.

(I just Googled and found thousands of hits. Mostly High School – not university.)

My first thought is transitioning students to university – those not seeking a terminal associates degree but rather a bachelors or beyond.

Thanks. BTW, if they don’t give you a specific job description, but only list the qualifications (Including, in this case, excellent computer skills and having a four-year degree in Education) what can you do but apply and assume you can do the work?! I appreciate your research..but looking at it, I can’t help but wonder how my education degree would be of any benefit! Maybe, hopefully, it’s more complicated than that at the college level. Maybe, hopefully, it can lead to something better. I just want a freakin’ job!!

@inkvisitor So, it’d probably be working out of the Registrars office, then. That gives me a better feel for it. Thanks.

I wonder if the school has an online directory you can search or browse. Maybe you can see the hierarchy of the position if there is more than one or if that one is marked “vacant.”

@inkvisitor I’ll check..thanks.

I go to a community college, but we don’t have this title. At a two-year college, transferring to four-year universities is the next step for most students, so that’s probably what this position is about. Transferring is a more complicated process than applying from high school directly into a college. It’s important to make sure that the credits will transfer and that you are meeting the degree requirements of the four-year college. (Sometimes they will have a guaranteed admission track, where if the student meets certain requirements, they are automatically accepted into a local public college.) You will probably have to learn admissions requirements for some local colleges in your area.

Thanks Haleth. I’m dressed and ready to go!

I have about a hundred answers for this and am not sure which is correct so I won’t go into it. Let us know what it was. Don’t be afraid to ask about specifics on the job during your Q&A period.

@RedPowerLady This is unbelievable! It’s a newly created position, and basically, what it is for starters, is helping kids who didn’t get their HS diploma, to get the GED and CNA licensing. In other words, it’s helping “high-risk” kids, which I’ve been doing on my own for 20 years!! Hopefully it will evolve into something more from there….

@Val123 Wow that sounds like a truly awesome job! That is something I would love to do myself. So how did the interview go?

Val123's avatar

@RedPowerLady I think it went very well….but, you know. Never know. This job is just…tailor made for me! It’s a newly created position which means, of course, I get to figure out how it’s gonna work! And that would be the third time I’ve been in that position, of defining the parameters of a new job. But, we’ll see….There are some down sides. It’s PT for now, but the hourly wage pretty much makes up for that. Also, it’s dependent on grant funding,which means all they can guarantee me is a job through May, but everyone has their fingers crossed. To be honest, I’m kind of in shock!

@Val123 Best wishes…sounds like it could be a good opportunity!

@inkvisitor Thanks. Fingers crossed!

@Val123 Well I’m super excited for you! Make sure you suck up to the grant-writer, hehe. Other than that sounds great.
