Who really invented rock and roll?
Does anyone know who the original founder of this great form of expression truly was? Robert Johnson? Or was it the devil himself? Gandhi? Chuck Berry? Fats Domino? Who was it really? I know this is mostly a matter of opinion. But there has to be a semi definitive answer. Who was it? Not who you think it was. But who it was, really…really. And go!

Not Ghandi, I think.
Elvis?
@PandoraBoxx The Palin link was awesome, this timeline was tremendous!
I found this on StumbleUpon. It is a great timeline, isn’t it? The author did a nice job with it.
Wow. And here I was going to say Louis Jordan. Good stuff, @PandoraBoxx!
I think the Roaring Twenties had something to do with it.
Rober Johnson was a Blues man. So that would rule him out.
Ok friends.
Contacted a good friend of mine. Whose book was just released the first of the month.
He is thet authority, as far as I am concerned, on this matter. His name is Clay Cole.
Robert Johnson was known as the Godfather of Rock and Roll. But he died in 1938. Before there was Rock and roll.
Rock and Roll was never invented, it evolved.
Alan Freed was given credit for coining and using the phrase Rock N’ Roll on his radio program called The Moondog Show.
The wording Rock and Roll was used in past songs, but not not as a direct connection as we see it used today.
Rock N’ Roll hall of fame gives Freed the “credit”.
Rock and roll is the perfect argument for the theory of evolution. Much like human beings, rock and roll was not created or invented by an intelligent designer, it evolved over time from earlier musical forms. No one can really say what the first rock and roll song was, or who wrote it. It definitely was not Robert Johnson. Robert Johnson is, well, I don’t want to continue my evolution analogy here or people will get the wrong idea, but while Robert Johnson’s music was influential, he didn’t invent Rock and Roll. Actually, he didn’t invent anything, he was clearly following in the footsteps of other delta blues artists, he just did it very well. It could even be argued that his influence on rock and roll was minimal at its creation, he was more influential with later British blues influenced rock bands like the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, and Cream.
@ChazMaz you beat me to it.
Wasn’t it that guy who hit the mastedon tusk with a wooden stick? Then he noticed, when he mimicked his heart beat, his squalling infant fell asleep. Tara diddle, diddle.
I thought it was whoever put the bop in the bop in the bop shoo bop shoo bop and the dip in the dip da dip da dip.
Gandhi was responsable for Bollywood musicals, not r&r.
The first name that pops into mind when I read the question is Chuck Berry. I LOVE him. I know he wasn’t the first at most of the things he did but he was wonderful and he is the one I associate most with the term “rock and roll”. But they’re all great :)
Has anyone mentioned yet that it started from slavery?
From the website The History of Rock N Roll
“A form of popular music arising from and incorporating a variety of musical styles, especially rhythm and blues, country music, and gospel”
Rock N Roll has huge roots in Rhythm and Blues (also Gospel). The history of the Blues has very deep roots in the slavery. So if you really want to go back to the deep origins I’m putting my vote in right now.
@RedPowerLady That’s absolutely the root, but in keeping with my evolution metaphor, everything came from Africa.
Jesus. End of discussion.
No that was Rock N’ Spear
Wrong. It was Fish N’ Rolls.
Bill Haley and the Comets came before Chuck Berry, didn’t they? With , “Rock Around the Clock.” Elvis had “Mystery Train” Very early on. Some kinda train. Not well known. But Haley’s song was very unique and I think the lst R&R song.
