Really sad and ridiculous. I don’t know why athletics comes before education so much in this country, especially when they are supposed to go hand in hand.
My brother teaches at a high school in Virginia. He said there are kids on the football team who are failing almost all of their classes, but the school does nothing about it and won’t make the coaches bench them. So the kids can sleep through school and fail but still get the reward of being able to play their sport after school lets out….why? Where’s the motivation?
I always heard the dumb jock stereotype, but this? Wow.
I don’t mind that athletes can’t read. Hell, that’s not something they seem to need. But the fact that they’re getting scholarships, that’s what disturbs me.
Look upstream. Unscrupulous, greedy adults (university presidents, and heads of athletic programs) are robbing young men of their best opportunity to join the middle class, and they are doing it for money. You can’t blame the athletes.
It’s a failure of our education system. Starting in the first grade and going all the way up.
@skfinkel Well, if they have 2nd grade reading capabilities, I think it’s safe to assume that first grade wasn’t the failure, nor second grade. I’d say the failure starts at third grade.
