Is saying I am worse than a girl at mechanical stuff sexist?

I said that I am bad at mechanical things, worse than a girl even. (Well, I put it grammatically correct, but that’s not the point.)
Is this sexist, and while we’re on the topic, can I allude to the great Carrie Bradshaw and wonder: Will girls ever be considered equal to men in Guy stuff?

I am the mechanic in my house. My husband is the computer geek. If it needs building, re-building or repair, it’s my job. It it needs tidying, organizing or rebooting, it’s his job.
Yes! You were being sexist.
What the hell is guy stuff…I almost want to match your sexism with examples but thanks to the morality question asked earlier will take the higher road (or should I say the womanly road).
Yes, it does. I take umbrage, sir. For shame.
Everyone is sexist to an extent right? If not sexist something else then.
Probably not in most mens’ minds, but in reality we surpassed you eons ago!
@mponochie The higher road is synonymous with the womanly road. Women are by far superior to men. Note: guys in this thread are answering just this question, slowly. Women are doing three other things while taking the piss out of me. I adore women. Hear me roar!
@mponochie Guy stuff is pretending not to hear you say the garbage by the door needs to be taken out, or pretending not to know where the PB is stored in your house, or pretending not to see the mess of crumbs made while using the toaster.
And I’ll have you know that I change my own oil and have replaced tires and sparkplugs. And I can solder like nobody’s bitch.
Yeah, it’s a complete sexist generalization. It’s implying that half the population isn’t good at something simply because of their gender. How do you think it would sound if you replaced “girl” with “Asian” or something? Women will be considered equal a whole lot sooner if people quit saying thinks like “worse than a girl.”
@NewZen: Sissy—you query like a girl.
Will girls ever be considered equal to men in Guy stuff?
When their penises are bigger than those of men.
yeah it is kinda sexist but hey, it could be worse…
you could throw like a girl
@patg7590 That would be worse. You coming to the party at the club?
@NewZen yes… but keep on the DL remember?
First question- yep, it’s absolutely sexist. But it’s probably not your fault. You didn’t come up with the idea on your own; you had to be taught (probably had to have it subtly beaten into you) that women aren’t good at mechanical things. So you’re sexist, but it’s not your fault.
Regarding your “Will women (would you stop calling them girls?) ever be good at “guy stuff” question, just ask yourself “what is guy stuff, why is it guy stuff, and what taught me that this is guy stuff, and does it make sense that this should be designated as guy stuff and (agai) why should it make sense that this is designated guy stuff?”
I don’t think it’s sexist because women have traditionally had a complete lack of interest for car mechanics and unless stats show otherwise, there still is something like 1 female mech for 1 million male ones.
There are probably excellent female mechs but they’re the exception, again unless the world has changed so much that stats show an even split, but I wouldn’t count on it.
@Harpsiccord would you please stop calling us guys? sheesh no respect I tell ya
@Harpsiccord—You may have missed the irony – I am in awe of women – and most of the women in my life have been very good at mechanical things – you wouldn’t believe what my little girl can do. Scroll up, I also wrote this: The higher road is synonymous with the womanly road. Women are by far superior to men. Note: guys in this thread are answering just this question, slowly. Women are doing three other things while taking the piss out of me. I adore women. Hear me roar!
I suck at mechanical things – and this was a continuation of a (joke) coversation in another thread. But I thought it would provoke an inetersting debate – particluarly as there are men who feel like that.
Now get back into the kitchen and remove your shoes.
@NewZen doesn’t help to deify women either
people are people
@NewZen of course there is..men aren’t better than women…women aren’t better than men…is it really complicated to you?
@NewZen well thank you for an honest answer
My answer are always honest, or trying to amuse. There is nothing else.
Yes it’s sexist. You are using women as the standard of ineptitude when it comes to mechanical things. Many, many women are very capable when it comes to manual labor and mechanics. My sister could fix stuff just be taking it apart and looking at it before she was a teen. My wife has built a fence, a screened in patio, and has fixed so many other things.
Why bring in gender when you explain your inability to do something that is stereotypical to your gender. Don’t you see that gender is not real, it’s a construct, you are who you are. You suck at mechanical things. That’s it. I also suck at mechanical thing. I am also completely non-domestic, but I don’t say I’m like a guy when it comes to cooking an ironing. That just sounds ridiculous.
I do wonder how anyone can make the statement “I love women.” Does that mean you have never met a woman you didn’t love? Do you have to wait until you get to know them first or do you just love them based on their sex?
And why don’t you love all men? (I assume we are using the word love in a not necessarily physical sense). What do all women have that men do not? And how do you come to the conclusion that all women are superior to all men? Because I have met some sub par examples of both.
@rooeytoo You cleverly asked: Does that mean you have never met a woman you didn’t love? Do you have to wait until you get to know them first or do you just love them based on their sex?_You then wisely assumed: _And why don’t you love all men? (I assume we are using the word love in a not necessarily physical sense). What do all women have that men do not? Followed with: And how do you come to the conclusion that all women are superior to all men?
We-hell: I was told long ago, there’s a calm before the storm. And I know: it’s been calm here for some time.
Secondly: When you assume something, you make an ass out of u and me.
The real answers? Yes and yes: I was raised respectful of women based on their being women, period. That’s just me. Strong matriarchal lineage – I don’t even question it. Like the Borg _ I’ve been assimilated and resistance has proven futile over the years.
I may love all men too, but that wasn’t the point of the joke of this thread.
All women are naturally superior to men, period. Ask your mommy, she’ll tell you.
It’s 3:30 a.m. and I need some coffee. If you want to comtinue fighting – I’ll be in the sissy club question over there. Bring your helmet.
Thank you for practicing safe sex.
@NewZen – My mom is dead and I don’t think she would have said that anyhow.
I knew it was a joke, well ASSUMED it was but then you said you loved women and in my experience, men who used that phrase generally loved anatomical parts of women not the entire package. Maybe you are different, that is why I asked if you never met a woman you didn’t love???
Respect for and loving all are so far apart, they don’t even relate in my brain.
And do you really love all men? You must be a hellish agreeable person to love all humans, period!!!
What is the sissy club? And should I bring my bicycle helmet or my motorcycle helmet and if it is the motorcycle helmet, should I bring the full face one I use for riding on the highway or the in the bush or should I bring the little harley helmet I use for around town on my little BeeWee?
I am a certified Diesel Mechanic, and I will tell you, @NewZen yes your question is sexist to a point, but it is nothing compared to the stuff i had to go through, during my training. I had guys, trying to prove that I couldn’t do the work, but to me it was a challenge. A challenge that I took on, and completed, with an ASE in medium, and heavy duty electrical, and air brakes. Most of the guys in my class, failed. I moved on to become the only female mentor in diesel mechanics, parts, and electrical. Out of almost 600 students, 30 of us were female, and overcame the odds.
Good on ya @brinibear – you bring pride to the rest of us!
@rooeytoo thanks. Hard work does pay off, but determination is what made me prove to the guys that I am equal. :)
@NewZen, saying you’re worse than a girl as a mechanic, then looking at @brinibear‘s story is like saying “You skate like a girl!” after watching these “girls” skate!
@brinibear You are an inspiration! My daughter is studying robotics (grade 12) and airplane mechanics/electronics. She is the only girl in her grade. I know it’s from her mom’s genes: God knows I’m useless at that stuff.
I hope by now people realise that I said it in total irony: scroll up and read.
