Good places to leave a car all day in downtown SF?

Not used to having a car, have little idea about where to find FREE/CHEAP and SAFE parking.

1. near Metreon/Yerba Buena Gardens
2. near Embarcadero theatre complex
3. near Civic Center (Davies, City Hall area)

Its not free. But the safest parking I felt and used was the 5th Street car garage. 5th and Mission.

my friend actually got his in-dash stolen out of his car in the 5th and mission lot. but from what ive heard about other lots.. it remains the safest bet in my opinion.
