How do you save Firefox bookmarks and preferences?

Asked by shockvalue (5800points) February 2nd, 2008

Due to multiple reasons, I have to wipe my hard drive clean and reinstall my operating system (windows XP) I am wondering if anyone knows a fast and easy way to save all of my preferences in firefox.
i.e. (no pun intended) bookmarks, themes, plug-in’s, ad-on’s etc. I’ve done it before, but it was all manual, literally writing out every URL in my bookmarks list. Very tedious work, there has got to be an easier way! Thanks so much

I would make a copy of your profile..

Directions for doing so can be found here.

And here is a tool that makes it easier.

Ah, the fresh feeling of a new profile, eh? :)

Well don’t fret, there are many different solutions for where you’re at in your computing life cycle.

For your bookmarks there are several different options out there that will synconize your bookmarks, in fact there are over 200 extensions alone in the ‘Bookmark’ section of Mozilla’s Firefox page:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/browse/type:1/cat:22

Most people are using the del.icio.us plugin – which interfaces with the most popular social bookmarking page in the world:

If you haven’t gotten into social bookmarking, I’d recommend giving this one a shot.

An even easier and more private route is Foxmarks, which isn’t public or social at all but will just sync your bookmarks:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2410

Personally I’m using Diigo, it’s a bit of a different experience but to each their own, right? :)

Now that we have your bookmarks covered we need to address the rest of your profile, and for that we can use the wonderful FEBE – Firefox Environment Backup Extension
http://customsoftwareconsult.com/extensions/febe/febe.html

This goes as far as backing up everything into .xpi files that you can store on a CD or DVD or even an FTP server and always be ready to back-up or even syncronize your machines (any machine that has FEBE installed)

If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. And if you’d like to add me to any of the previously mentioned sites my user name is always livejamie

Take care!

you could just make a copy of your user profile, which you should find on c:\Documents and Settings\YOUR WINDOWS USER\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\SOMETHING_RANDOM.default\

I use the Firefox extension X-marks (formerly foxmarks) to sync my bookmarks and passwords between multiple machines (PC desktop + laptop + Macbook). These are easily imported into other browsers (not full syncing but good enough for the rare occasion that I use those alternatives).

FEBE is a great extension for saving all your other extension information/links, etc. I don’t have a solution for preferences yet but hope to see one here.

I also use delicious to back up my bookmarks.

There are programs like Macrium Reflect that make copies of your disc so you can just re-install everything again, too.

Good Luck.

I recommend FEBE as well, but may want to check out the Weave project (http://labs.mozilla.com/2007/12/introducing-weave/), might be invite only still though
