Beyond material possessions, what legacy would you most like to leave behind from your time on earth?

Asked by Tasdevilcol (93points) October 17th, 2009

Society quite often tends to think about our contribution to society in terms of the materials things we create and perhaps bequest to others. What about the impact we have on the lives of others through our direct interactions with others? How might you like to be remembered from the interactions you have with others?

You asked:Beyond material possessions, what legacy would you most like to leave behind from your time on earth? Because of my poor eyesight, I couldn’t tell if it was like or likely so I’ll aswer both:

I’ll likely leave a few songs and poems which no-one will appreciate until waaaaaaay after I’m dead and gone. Like Poe. (Yeah right, I’m in the same league as Poe.)

Like to leave: a legacy of unconditional love towards humankind – making my small contribution by giving this planet two of the most amazing and unique individuals – my kids – who are the hope for the future. As are, I hope, all our children.

I mean this without a tinge of ~

@NewZen great answer, imagine if everyone felt the same, pity were not all wired in similar ways :-(

An enigma – something to keep them guessing.

Well, it’s sill material, but I would leave 100 jars that I farted into in random places, for somebody to find and open

There is a line from the remake of Ocean’s 11 that I love: “I want the last check that I write in this life to bounce”.

Realistically, so long as my daughter’s college, wedding, etc. are paid for and my wife can support herself, I’m good to go.

Beyond that, it’s hard. Part of me hopes to be completely forgotten. It seems fitting somehow. I know that won’t happen, but I’m very ambivalent about how I’d like to be remembered or what I’d like to “leave behind”.

I guess I need to understand how people in my life view me now before I can answer – and I think I just realized, I don’t know that answer.

I would want to leave behind an incredible form of government, social conduct, discipline, and story of battle, in the hopes that Frank Miller will write a historical inaccurate graphic novel about it.

@XOIIO Nice. Smelly, but nice.

@Tasdevilcol You said “great answer, imagine if everyone felt the same, pity were not all wired in similar ways :-(”

I disagree, then there wouldn’t be anything unique or exciting to leave behind and then we wouldn’t be having this conversation because it would be the status quo.

If I finish my science path, I’d like to have made a large contribution to science, cancer biology specifically. If I change course and go down the art path, I’d like to have made a public mural that makes people realize what beauty is and where we can find it. Either way, I’d like to have grown old with someone and have experienced the love that comes with it.

I will leave behind a great sense of relief in those who survive me.

@Iclamae I’m all for individuals/teams making science breakthroughs, I was just noting that it is nice to have simple thoughts about something like this :-)

A time capsule. I did it when I was little at my elementary school. I would have my teddy bear in there, and a picture of me, and a list of whats on tv that particular day.

@shego why the TV listing?

shego's avatar

@XOIIO so that the people in the future can see what we were watching. Why not?

LOL wow

Pretty much what @NewZen said. I feel like my purpose in life is to raise my three children in such a way that they spread love and reason around them, like ripples in a pond.

@augustlan beautiful reply :-)
