How do I revirginize by jailbroken iPhone ?

Asked by clairedete (331points) February 2nd, 2008

I jailbroke my iPhone and am interested in revirginizing it but am completely puzzled by all of the information I’m finding online. If I update my software to version 1.1.3 will that just delete all of my mods or will it completely screw my baby? HELP!

To truly re-virginize an iPhone from a jailbroken state, you need to do a full restore in iTunes and choose “set up as a new phone,” NOT “restore from backup.”

Restoring from backup will leave some superfluous files from any third-party apps you might have installed.

Setting it up as a new phone will erase all your contacts, media, mail, etc., so make sure your address book is up to date on your computer before you restore.

Unless you have unlocked your phone, you can’t screw up your phone so bad that it cannot be repaired.

so jailbreaking and unlocking are two different things???

& to top it off, I never updated to 1.1.2 so now I’m stuck with a jailbroken, out of date iPhone. blahh. If I called Apple would they help me at all ?

Unlocked means the iPhone had been hacked to use on a different carrier network other than AT&T.

Jailbroken means it has been hacked to allow third-party applications to be installed.

I never updated to 1.1.2 either, I completely skipped it and went from jailbroken 1.1.1 to stock, non-jailbroken 1.1.3 with a full restore in iTunes.

I really never found the need to jailbreak. I have not seen any third party apps that i thought were so impressive to warrant it. Besides I was most impressed with the last firmware update, and am looking foward to the next one. ..... however long it may take.

@blunckhouse – is there any way to save my camera roll pictures or contacts with a full restore ?

Sorry I missed your last question. I hope it’s not too late. The reason photos are not saved during a restore is to save space, I assume. You would need to import them to your computer first, or you WILL lose them during the restore.

Once you have done the restore, you can put them back on the phone by putting them in a folder and telling iTunes to synchronize that folder back to the phone.

Think of the photos in your camera roll (on the phone) as the pictures you’ve taken with your digital camera: import them often and delete them from the phone, and then re-sync the ones you want to keep.
