How do you seize the day?

Asked by five99one (746points) October 19th, 2009

The question is fairly straightforward. Carpe diem, seize the day, live for today. How do you do it? You can share how you, personally, live each day to its fullest (or try to) or you can just give general insights on how one can live his life in a more carpe diem manner. Or whatever you want to shared related to carpe diem.

I have this grabber arm—the one I use to get things off of high selves…. ;-)

I’m actually never sure whether I’ve seized the day or not. I think I get into trouble seizing the day, but sometimes I can’t seem to help myself. I do what I really want to even though it will cause problems, and I let the future take care of itself. I’m not used to being impulsive that way.

But the other thing is that whatever I’m doing, I try to be fully present with it. If I am fluthering, then it is because answering questions gives me the most satisfaction at the moment. If I am doing work, it is because I care about the work.

On the other hand, often I have to do things when I’d rather be doing something else, and I resent having to do this. I think if I were carpe dieming, then I would just be fully into making lunches or taking out the trash, or solving household problems as I would be if I were doing what I chose. Unfortunately, I’m not that evolved. ;-)

Any day where you’ve made a good difference in someone’s life has been “seized” in my opinion.

My Mom once said to me: “Heather, don’t sweat the small stuff, and it’s ALL small stuff!” I now know that these words come from a book she was reading at the time but they have always stuck with me.

I have always strived to never waste a moment of my day “unhappy”. Never dwelling on things that are not in my control and living each day like it’s my last. We have one shot at this life, don’t waste it! – LB

I thought “Carpe diem” meant “Fish of the Day.”

There is no yesterday. There is no tomorrow. There is only today, and more specifically only NOW. Live it. Experience it. Relish it. Sound like bs? You won’t think so the older you get.

I read recently that “you only have what you give. It’s by spending yourself that you become rich” So, go and spend yourself :-)

I take Baz Luhrman’s advice, and do one thing every day that scares me.

No matter how large or small, I try to either have a new, unique adventure, or teach myself something new each day.

I slow myself down enough to be reminded each 24 hr little block of time I schedule my life around will be gone, never to repeat and I try to make something fantastic in each day if I can. It could be something simple like having sex or meeting friends for dinner or making someone laugh really well, or exchanging heartfelt music and poems. Something, I want to be able to look back on every calendar day and fill in something good.

For me seizing the day always begins with managing to get out of bed…
