I have a check card. I can deposit money into the account and withdraw cash like a debit card, but I can also use it in stores or online like a credit card without having to type in my pin.

I’d imagine it would be at least 90%.

I do, but I have had one since high school. I was lucky enough for my parents to pay for my gas, which was the initial reason they gave me the card (which links directly to the family account, not my own). When I moved to school, I set up an account with a different bank because our home bank doesn’t have branches in the city, and I got a debit/ATM card with that, which I only use to withdraw cash. Most of my friends have some form of card; its too difficult to just have cash all the time. Especially with being able to buy things online (textbooks from amazon.com, for example), it seems to be more important to have a card. Perhaps that’s also just more common because I’m living in NYC, I’m not sure.

Probably most college students I would guess has one or the other. If they don’t qualify, they probably have a pre-paid cc that can be used online. It is kind of hard to function without one these days..

I have a debit card.

I don’t know of any college students who don’t have a debit card. These days, it’s almost impossible to get around without one.

Credit cards are another matter. I’m in my third year of college and only now thinking about getting a credit card. They’re a lot more expensive and dangerous than debit cards, but they also have their advantage. So I’d say maybe 60% of college students have a credit card.

I’m assuming a lot of college students have at least one or the other.
As for me, I’m a college senior and I have a debit card, but not a credit card.

Every college student I know has a debit card. It’s really hard to get around without a bank account and a debit card. A lot of us don’t have credit cards. In the past I heard all these horror stories about credit card companies setting up tables at college orientations, and college students taking on massive credit card debt and ruining their credit. That has to be a thing of the past, with credit becoming so much less available, even to responsible adults. Credit card companies just don’t want to take on risky customers like college students, and students are being more careful.

Most I imagine – few people are without them nowadays.

While in college (three years ago), I didn’t really know of anyone who didn’t have a debit or check card. A lot of people’s financial aid was dispersed directly onto this card. In terms of credit cards, I’d agree with @ParaParaYukiko that it was probably around 60%. I had two check cards through college (so I could use them as credit or debit) for each of my two bank accounts. I also was an authorized user on my mother’s Discover card- I had my own card with my name on it, but the same account number- in case of emergencies. I chose to wait until I was done college and had an actual income to get my own credit card, which I think was a strong choice.
