We’re homeschooled, and if one of our birthdays lands on a weekday, the whole family goes out for a field trip. Any good suggestions for fun trips in Iowa?

Iowa? hmmmm…that’s a tough one.
Yes. Avoid the fields with cattle in them. If you can’t then tread very carefully.
How soon? The next two weeks are prime for corn mazes and apple orchards.
@Les, that is a great place, just an hour north of here. There’s a nice restaurant just on the other side, known as The Bluffs. Best kept secret in Iowa.
@Psychedelic_Zebra – Sorry to let the secret out. When I went to NIU (Northern Illinois University), we took a day trip out there. It was really fabulous. I think Iowa is a Best Kept Secret of the US.. so unsuspecting, no one ever thinks of Iowa, but there are some great spots in that state.
I dont think ‘Iowa’ and ‘fun’ are physically able to join together…...unless you add ‘is not’ between them.
I live in Minneapolis, MN but i have family in Iowa so I do go there when needs be. I have never enjoyed it.
@wenn You’re missing out on a lot of cool things here with your closed mind.
@Seth Go to West Bend & tour the Grotto.
Go to Dubuque & take a paddle wheel boat ride.
Tour the capital building.
Go to Cedar Rapids & tour the Grant Woods museum.
Go to Villisca & tour the axe murder house if you’re interested in that kind of thing
Go to Kalona & the Amana Colonies
Tour the Living History Farms in Des Moines
Go to Pella in May for the tulip festival
Go to Boone & take a train ride
In the winter, find a Christmas tree farm. Cut your own tree & take a sleigh ride.
And on & on. There’s tons of things to see & do here if you look for it.
Ooohhhh cool. It’s been years since we were there. It’s an interesting place. Since you say it’s weird, you must not be Amish?
Nope. Me, my dad, and my siblings, were all born and raised on the Island of Trinidad. My mom was born here in Kalona. We moved here about 3 years ago.
So we don’t get a conversation going here, I’ll PM you…....
@jbfletcherfan If you like it thats great, I’ve been visiting relatives in Jefferson, Ames and Des Moines for 22 years now, I’ve been to various other parts of the state as well.
Im not interested in Iowa.
@wenn That’s fine. However, when someone asks a question about what to do for a field trip in Iowa, maybe you could ignore the Q, or be helpful.
So, in 22yrs you never went to one museum, or historical landmark to enjoy your time with your family? If so, your family life must bite…don’t blame it on Iowa
Sure Iowa doesn’t have NYC, but then, New York City doesn’t have anything I’d want to see, either. Illinois is a great state to visit, and so is Wisconsin, just stay out of Chicago and Milwaukee. Big cities are no place for regular people.
@SpatzieLover Not in Iowa.
I enjoy my life here in Minnesota quite a bit, I have gone and still do go to museums, historical landmarks and other places/events fairly regularly.
I am close to my sister, but neither her or myself get along with our parents all that well, so sure our family outings might not be all that exciting like yours.
Regardless of my personal family circumstances, Iowa is still one the most boring places I have ever been. So deal with it, I’m still entitled to my opinion.
I agree with SpatzieLover. If you don’t like Iowa, fine. Leave it alone. It’d be like someone asking me if I knew where to go in California. Just stay out of the of the question if you don’t have something positive to add.
its funny how people can’t handle a little friendly criticism, btw I am quite the opposite of closed minded
@wenn [not the mod] I’m a homeschool mom. This KID asking this question lives in Iowa & is homeschooled. By adding your comment you are basically telling him you think his life will be a bore until he’s old enough to move out of the state. That’s absurd and closed minded. Bliss can be found within one’s self anywhere. Even in corn & sunflower field filled Iowa. ^^Look at how many people found fun things to do & see.
@Seth – Trinidad and Iowa – that’s an interesting combination. How did your parents meet? Why did you all leave Trinidad? Can you find callaloo and cassava in Iowa?
