What are your thoughts on "Paranormal Activity"?

Asked by kibaxcheza (1091points) October 19th, 2009

Real footage, or actors?

Does the lack of any form of credits mean anything to you?

What is your over all impression of this movie?

I think anyone who tries to make money off of paranormal activity is probably full of crap. I haven’t seen the movie, but it seems like Blair Witch all over again.

Jeruba's avatar

What movie are you referring to?

judochop's avatar

Actors for sure. Meh. It’s a horror movie. It’s pretty okay. Someone just re-did the Blair Witch thing.

$11K to make a movie that will create millions…yep the speculation will make them even more in video games & web site. I’d say it’s real inteligent finacially.

kibaxcheza's avatar

It was a creepy movie
after seeing a budget i realized it was mad fake, but initially since it was shot like that i thought there was some truth to it, then the lack of cradits, and the cast listing using their real names like that. Not gonna lie, threw me though a loop for a second…. And im really not one who scares easy. The end of that movie was creepy as hell.

and it was on a different caliber than BWP. You can tell whats going on at all times….

You mean like a politician keeping a promise?

(Oh – it’s a movie. Nope – not even heard of it. I am sure my daughters have, but not me.)

Ame_Evil's avatar

I don’t believe in paranormal activity, and as a psychologist I have to believe that it’s basis is in natural human behaviour. However, despite detesting people who exploit this and littering crap shows like Most Haunted on tv, I quite enjoy movies based around ghosts and looking at supposéd footage of ghosts as I find it quite fascinating as it hits the human fear of the “unknown”.

markyy's avatar

Who said there aren’t any credits? They are all starting actors, check here on imdb.

jackm's avatar

Looks like a good way to turn a small investment into a lot of money.

kibaxcheza's avatar

@jackm very much so, that movie will make an easy 3 mill opening week…. or at least id may have? It says it was shot in 2007….

and @markyy during the movie there were no credits. so i said there wasnt, based on what i saw during the movie. Go see it and youll understand.

mattbrowne's avatar

I prefer well-researched, quality science fiction movies.

kibaxcheza's avatar

it wasnt a bad movie…. go see it before you put it down…... low budget doesnt mean bad there mr. negativity.

efritz's avatar

I was scared shitless, but I’m just an easy target for scary movies. Also the director actually LIVES in that house, and apparently his ex-girlfriend experienced some weird stuff similar to what happens in the movie.

kibaxcheza's avatar

HOLD UP @mattbrowne

well researched…... science fictions? thats an oxymoron dude. Fiction means not real. science fiction, not real science…. how do you research something thats fake…....?

DarkScribe's avatar

@kibaxcheza well researched…... science fictions? thats an oxymoron dude.

If you are speaking from personal experience, then I agree – one thing that you mention is half right.

Psychedelic_Zebra's avatar

Hmm, 75% of Americans believe in ghosts and angels and all sorts of goofy nonsense. This movie will make millions because it plays on the fears and suspicions of the gullible and uninformed. Anecdotal evidence is not evidence at all.

kibaxcheza's avatar

@Darkscribe If you think about it its completely right…. how can you study something the doesnt yet exist in our perspective. Its like saying “yeah, i have a Dr. in thermonuclear genetics” or “I’m in the R&D of alien technologies”. To the best of my knowledge, they dont exist, nor do “predators”, space clowns, or those guys from mars attacks….. How would one research something that does not exist…..

“Yo, how do you make “blueberry yum-yum’”
“You dont….”

DarkScribe's avatar

@kibaxcheza Darkscribe If you think about it its completely right….

No, I thought about and I stand by my previous post.

(There was a thread a while ago about people who lacked a sense of humour. Did you read it?)

jackm's avatar

@everyone here

There is actually a field called futurology, which is the study of the future.. Ray Kurzweil is a notable futurologist.

But either way. Lots of people do research for fiction. Just because it doesn’t happen, doesn’t mean it does not relate to our world. If you take any creative writing class you will see the effort required to put together a good work of fiction. In my screen writing classes we have to do so much research for even a short fiction film.

kibaxcheza's avatar

sorry but none of that makes any kinda sense to me what so ever. How do things that dont exist effect us….. thats like saying that we need to be immunized for a sickness that hasnt effected a singer person….

@darkscribe and i have a sense of humor, yall have yet to appreciate it what so ever, so i just stopped trying. Every joke i tired to make either made me a racist, or someone said something along the lines of “thats not even close to helpful jerk [moderated] [moderated] [moderated]”. so i would appreciate if you didnt try to lecture me, or make comments at my expense, for things youve previously flipped out on me for.

@jackm I have taken a few creative writing courses. None of my works of fiction really required much research at all. And most of them were met with nothing put praise ( and spelling errors).

Jeruba's avatar

Ok. The title was in lowercase without quotes when I saw the question, and I thought it was generic. No comment—I know nothing about the movie.

kibaxcheza's avatar

It was pretty good IMO
you should check it out if youre ok with scary movies.

jackm's avatar

@kibaxcheza
That is probably because you already knew a lot about the subject you were writing on.

rangerr's avatar

@kibaxcheza People DO research things for fiction stories.. the plot and characters are usually the fiction part.. but other things in the story need to be at least plausible or the story is going to make as much sense as Dr. Seuss.

rangerr's avatar

@jackm In his defense, most creative writing classes hand you a topic and say go… whether you know about the topic or not.

kibaxcheza's avatar

@Axemusica have you seen it yet? (kinda funny, i didnt see that post before XD )

@jackm @rangerr in some cases. But at the same time, how do you research giant humanoid mecha, or alien races, or other galaxies, light sabers, spaceships, propulsion systems that would work in a vacuum, and the such. ( ok the last one wasnt a great example but you get the idea).

rangerr's avatar

@kibaxcheza That’s the fiction part.. I didn’t say ALL people researched things.. some just make everything up, but SOME do research to make it at least plausible.

kibaxcheza's avatar

I know sometimes i dont speak clearly, or atleast show my intensions so for that i apologize. Can you give me some examples and help me shed some light on what im not understanding?

There was a news items here (Australia) in recent months where it was done using a household electric drill while being instructed via telephone by a specialist. It was successful. See

@DarkScribe I couldn’t make heads or tails from your response, until I found this question: http://www.fluther.com/disc/58796/drilling-someones-head-to-relieve-pressure-ep-of-house/
Any chance you answered in the wrong thread?

DarkScribe's avatar

@markyy Any chance you answered in the wrong thread?

Yes – Fluther went down as I was responding, so when it came up again (in the appropriate thread) I didn’t see it so I posted it again – fresh. This has happened a couple of times recently – not at all sure why. I hit “Answer” and then Fluther times out for between a few minute and a half hour.

Pretty difficult to answer in the wrong thread any other way, Fluther makes the choice as to where to post your responses.

mattbrowne's avatar

@kibaxcheza – It’s not an oxymoron at all. Don’t confuse fiction and magic. Here’s a rough classification that might help:

Hard science fiction – Uses existing science based on confirmed theories plus projected technology

Soft science fiction – Uses existing science including formal hypotheses and some speculation plus projected technology

Fantasy – Writers can create their own (magical) laws

Contact or Gattaca are examples of well-researched hard science fiction movies. Jurassic Park or Back to the Future are examples of soft science fiction movies (time travel, parallel universes, flying antigravity cars). Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings are examples of fantasy.

My own novel is hard science fiction. It’s set in 2061 and all features are scientific facts already in today (the core topic is embryo space colonization). This is what I mean with well-researched. Given the speed of the current technological progress we can make assumptions of what is likely to be available in 2020, 2040 or 2060. Very often technology progresses even fast. Look at Captain Kirk’s computers. No one in 1966 would have expected the phenomenal progress in computer science.

kibaxcheza's avatar

@Axemusica you should, itll give ya some shivers and itll take you a min to get to sleep that night lol

@mattbrowne Roger that. Guess i thought that the idea of reploids and time travel were all just cool ideas…. didnt know you could get college credit for some study hours.

i kid i kid. tho, on that topic, you should watch “Frequently Asked Questions About Time Travel”. It was a funny movie.

@DarkScribe It might be your Router or ISP. My modem has been doin that a lot lately, drops the DNS about a million times a day. Gonna ream Comcast if it keeps up.

(sorry for the DP)

DarkScribe's avatar

@kibaxcheza It might be your Router or ISP

Nope. When it goes down all other web activity is normal and www.downornot.com says “Fluther is down! It might be the link to the South West Pacific backbone, but most other US and Canadian sites seem to be fine – though I haven’t done a trace route to check. Maybe if I think of it next time I’ll do a trace and see exactly where it is falling over.

kibaxcheza's avatar

lol. you went beyond me. i doubt id take it that far, like, ever. Something doesnt work i fix my end, if its not something i can fix, i wait till someone else fixes it.
