What discontinued product(s) do you miss and wish would be brought back?

Asked by forestGeek (9318points) October 23rd, 2009

Today I was thinking about Urkel O’s (don’t ask why!) and other lost cereals, which got me thinking about other great products which have also sadly disappeared over time. I’d love to hear what products my fellow jellies are sad to have lost.

@Simone_De_Beauvoir – Loved those! Didn’t they start making computer versions of these? Just not the same at all! :(

orbitz soda

It was a fruit flavored drink with the consistency of mucus and it have little edible bits floating around in it. It was very tasty, but not surprisingly didn’t last on the market very long.

C2 – during the low carb craze, Coke put out a hybrid soda that had about 12 grams of carbs in 8 ounces (a regular can has 25)...that’s the same amount as an 8 ounce glass of milk. And it tasted JUST LIKE regular Coke, which I stopped drinking when I was diagnosed with diabetes. Apparently they decided that putting out diet coke with vitamins was a better idea with greater market potential.

Not that I could eat them anymore, but Hydrox cookies are WAY better than Oreos

Little Caesars used to make pepperoni crazy bread…they’d make each batch to order, and would start with their bread/pizza dough, they’d slather it with garlic butter and parmesan, slap on some pepperoni, fold it in half, brush it with more butter and parmesean, bake it, slather it with more butter and parmesean and serve it with crazy sauce.

I miss Shakey’s restaurants…they used to be everywhere, now you can only find them basically in California and the Phillipines (though there is one abysmally awful one in Wisconsin).

When Tombstone pizzas first came out instead of pepperoni, they had what was called ‘sliced sausage with pepperoni seasoning”...it was WAY better. Even after they started to put pepperoni on their pizzas they used to be WAY better than they are now, because now in addition to the not so good pepperoni on top, they mix little pepperoni chunks into the sauce.

Again, something I couldn’t eat anyway, but Brach’s jelly beans used to contain some brown jelly beans…they were cinamon flavored and they were my favorite.

Another thing that I can’t eat anyway, but they started putting strawberry in the Mike and Ikes…I think cherry, lemon, lime and orange are all tart/citrusy fruits, a strawberrry is a berry, it belongs in Cherry and Bub, not Mike and Ikes.

Pudding pops

I’ll think of more, I’m sure.

The original blue package Starburst. They changed the flavors in the blue tube a few years ago, and life hasn’t been the same since.

First off @Syger I hate and love you all at the same time for the 3D doritos answer. I love you because you reminded me of them and I hate you because you reminded me of them and now I want them!! GA!

I have missed these brownies that you make called Mississippi Mud Brownies I think they were Betty Crocker. It was delicious brownies with marshmellow creme swirled all in them. I haven’t been able to find them for more than 10 years! :(

sjmc1989's avatar

Oh yeah and Opps.. all berries cereal

sjmc1989's avatar

@hookecho I buy Tahiti Treat all the time!

poofandmook's avatar

and please don’t judge, but I loved the McRib :x

And the queso crunchwraps from Taco Bell…

I fucking hate Atkins today >.<

jeanna's avatar

@dalepetrie They still make pudding pops, here at least. I did love those.

Kaboom! It was my favorite cereal as a kid!

gussnarp's avatar

The Commodore 64.

poofandmook's avatar

@gussnarp: was that the Amiga? We had one of those when I was a kid.. my dad took hours programming one of my books into it, so it would read it back to me lol

gussnarp's avatar

@poofandmook No no, the C64 predates the Amiga by about 3 years.

forestGeek's avatar

@dalepetrie – Aww, Shakey’s Pizza Parlor!! I loved going there when they had the “Parlor” theme, silent movies playing, etc. I ended up getting my first job there and continued to work there though college. Never got sick of the pizza!

nxknxk's avatar

Furbies, for scaring little cousins. And Moon Shoes.

gemiwing's avatar

@Syger Yes! 3D Jalapeno Doritos were wonderful.

I miss Kaboom. It was the only marshmallow cereal we got when I was a child. Deelish.

Merlin- it was a handheld game that I adored.

forestGeek's avatar

@gemiwing – lurve for Merlin!!

evegrimm's avatar

I miss Trident Cool Rush regular (it’s still available in whitening gum). It was a yummy sweet minty gum. :(

augustlan's avatar

Mr. Goodbar Bites. They were a limited time candy that I fell in love with… salted peanuts dipped in milk chocolate. So good! Can’t be found anymore.

Butter Brickle ice cream. This is my all time favorite! It used to be in every grocer’s freezer, but now you have to order it from a specialty ice cream place and have it shipped w/ dry ice. Just not worth the expense. :/

filmfann's avatar

The old Sparklers fireworks. Metal handles that got hot; incredibly dangerous. Very cool.

forestGeek's avatar

@filmfann – yes…and those snakes, oh how I miss those too.

RedPowerLady's avatar

@forestGeek The snakes are my favorite! I mean the little black pebbles that turn into snakes.

forestGeek's avatar

Those snakes were so amazing!! Where and why did they go? :(

RedPowerLady's avatar

@forestGeek I think they are still around but they are hard to find. I got some about 3 years back but haven’t done fireworks for the most recent two years. I think they are classified as unsafe. I could care less (when it is just me I worry about I mean). I love those suckers!

sjmc1989's avatar

I keep thinking of more but only food products. I miss Cherry Lemon Sun Drop!!

Clair's avatar

@dalepetrie They still make pudding pops.

tinyfaery's avatar

Tart n Tiny’s—loved those.
Berry Berry Kix cereal—still exists.

I miss the original Welch’s Concord Grape Juice, not from concentrate. And the popsicles. I can’t find them anywhere.

Honey Bunches of Oats cereal.

dalepetrie's avatar

@forestGeek – YES, the parlor…I loved the player piano.

@jeanna & @Clair – I did not realize they still make pudding pops, I haven’t seen them in 2 decades.

@hookecho – I think Tahitian Treat is still around, pretty sure I just saw it.

And @tinyfaery – they DEFINITELY still make Honey Bunches of Oats, they have in fact started to make them in a whole slew of new flavors. I have some with Cinnamon Bunches in my cupboard right now. You can even buy a cereal called “Just Bunches”

tinyfaery's avatar

Oops—I meant Honey Clusters.

Herbal Essesnces’ 1. leave in conditioner 2. Original scent shampoo
Orbit soda
Jell-o Pudding Pops

Clair's avatar

@ubersiren Why does everyone think that they stopped making Pudding Pops?!

sjmc1989's avatar

@hookecho It might be. I’m in North Carolina and I can only find it in one grocery store near me. I had never heard of it until probably 2 years ago but it is yummy! Maybe I can mail some to you :)

dalepetrie's avatar

I found this list of discontinued food products, enjoy the stroll down memory lane.

sjmc1989's avatar

@dalepetrie Lurve for You!! I saw this store on The Food Netwok on a show and I was trying to remember the name of it. I searched forever thank you so much!

poofandmook's avatar

They stopped making Date Bread mix?? WTF??

forestGeek's avatar

@dalepetrie – Great list! I had forgotten about Chocolate Cool Whip and Coke II.

From that list I was also reminded of Mr. Salty Pretzels. In a “low sodium” world, a product with a name as such doesn’t stand a chance, though they probably had as much salt then as the pretzels today.

poofandmook's avatar

you know all I want in life now is a big, thick piece of date bread like we used to have every year on Thanksgiving :*(

Jazminjonz's avatar

Smokin’ Cheddar BBQ Doritos.
Mellow Magic popcorn.

poofandmook's avatar

I just went to the grocery store and I… found… DATE BREAD QUICK BREAD MIX!! F that list! lol

dalepetrie's avatar

@poofandmook – was it Betty Crocker? If so, did it expire in 1993? If not, perhaps they’ve brought it back. I think the Peanut Butter Twix is a great candy bar, they introduced it in the 80s, and they stopped making it in the 90s. I actually wrote to them and they said, “you’ll be glad to know we’re re-introducing it in the fall”. They came back to the shelves, same as ever. Well, I stopped eating candy, but maybe a year ago now I see they got rid of the Peanut Butter Twix and replaced it with Twix PB. I cheated a little once when I had the opportunity to taste a bite of one, as a little here and there ain’t gonna kill me…everything in moderation, even for a diabetic person, and they had replaced the cookie with a chocolate cookie. It was TOO much chocolate, doesn’t taste 1/10th as good. Will they bring it back again? Maybe. Red and blue M&Ms disappeared for decades but are back now. I guess even though I hate them, the original Mike and Ike’s had strawberry in the mix (I still say cherry, lemon, lime and orange are all tangy fruits and should not be combined with strawberry, but the company disagrees), and they brought that back a few years ago. I mentioned Hydrox, last winter they put out a 100 anniversay Hydrox package after being off the shelves for over a decade…they didn’t bring them back for good, but it’s not unprecedented for a company to start producing something it once gave up on. This list is still by and large a good resource, and you should be thankful for it, after all, I bet you’re going to enjoy the hell out of that bread, and will never take it for granted again!

poofandmook's avatar

@dalepetrie: LOL it didn’t expire in 1993, but I don’t remember if it was Betty Crocker… I would have to look at the box which is outside in my car for now :)

dalepetrie's avatar

Another perhaps more frightening possibility, since this list doesn’t have dates on which things disappeared is that they have some stock left and are getting rid of it in certain markets where it still sells. I found out they did this with C2, for awhile there was one bottler still making it but it was only being distributed in 3 states. Could be something where you found it today, but might not in the future. If it IS Betty Crocker, you should write to them and ask if they’ve discontinued it or recently started making it again, and that you’d enthusiastically like to encourage them to continue making it. If you find out they are discontinuing it, stock up now.

poofandmook's avatar

There was only one box left… :( But it’s autumn now, and date/pumpkin mixes never stay on the shelves, since there was also only one box of the pumpkin mix I bought.

patg7590's avatar

does anyone remember Mr. Green pop that was made by Sobe? I loved that stuff…

poofandmook's avatar

@dalepetrie: It was Pillsbury… but it’s the same stuff, even still labeled “Quick Bread.” My guess is Betty Crocker and Pillsbury are part of the same company and it was removed from the BC brand only.

dalepetrie's avatar

@poofandmook – yep, Betty Crocker and Pillsbury are both owned by General Mills (the HQ of which I’ll be driving right by on the freeway in about an hour).

DominicX's avatar

You know what I just found out? Nestle no longer makes a yellow SweetTart. The lemon ones are gone as of 2009. This sucks. The yellow ones were always my favorite. Also, I kind of miss when the green ones used to be lime and I miss the old shapes…

SweetTarts just aren’t the same anymore… :(

poofandmook's avatar

I’m sorry but I’m still tickled pink that Date Bread just changed to Pillsbury instead of Betty Crocker.

forestGeek's avatar

@DominicX – What? Serious? I always like the yellow ones too. I’ve notice some people hate hellow candy for some reason

@poofandmook – That’s so awesome! I’ve never tried it, but your excitement makes me really want to. A great discovery when you thought something was gone forever, only to rediscover it!

poofandmook's avatar

@forestGeek: It’s not that it’s a culinary showstopper… it’s just that every Thanksgiving, we had a loaf of pumpkin and a loaf of date. Actually I think we had two of each. And they were just out on the table, before and after dinner, with a butter knife for people to slice. It’s a comfort/memory food for me, if nothing else :)

poofandmook's avatar

I just thought of another one.

When I was a kid, you used to be able to get this lunch meat called “chicken roll”... I think Weaver used to make it. I haven’t seen it since I was little. Also, Weaver used to make these miniature chicken drumsticks… I LOVED them. I haven’t seen them either.

NaturallyMe's avatar

Dr. Pepper! It’s obviously not been discontinued, but we don’t get it over here anymore, and it was my favourite soda. sniff

Also, little banana sweets, they were so delicious, they’ve been here for YEARS and YEARS, and then i just suddenly noticed i couldn’t find them anymore. That was very sad. Still is very sad. Meanies.

dalepetrie's avatar

@NaturallyMe – just where the hell do you live? You can get Dr. Pepper at McDonald’s…I’ve driven through 48 states, and could count on one hand the number of towns I’ve driven through that don’t have a McDonald’s.

NaturallyMe's avatar

@dalepetrie – I live in South Africa.

dalepetrie's avatar

Well, that WOULD explain it, now wouldn’t it!

NaturallyMe's avatar

@dalepetrie – not really, that’s no excuse, they’re just MEAN!

dalepetrie's avatar

@NaturallyMe – Maybe you can find a knock off like Mr. Pibb or Dr. Thunder.

I feel your pain. I used to love C2, the low calorie version of Coca-Cola….I can’t drink regular soda, and I can’t stand the taste of diet sodas, and they came up with this can of Coke that had less than ½ the calories of regular Coke but in my opinion tasted better than regular Coke. It was a win/win, I got hooked on it, and they stopped making it.

I agree, the soda companies are just mean.

NaturallyMe's avatar

@dalepetrie – we do have something very similar, it’s called Iron Brew, it’s yummy, but Dr. Pepper is still better. :D

redmannomad's avatar

Marathon bars (basically milk duds – milk chocolate coated caramel – in a long skinny honeycomb shaped bar) and Cherry and Bub Mike and Ikes.

forestGeek's avatar

@redmannomad – I remember the Marathon Bar! They had rulers of the packaging. Yum!

dalepetrie's avatar

If you live anywhere near a Cost Plus World Market (I used to, but they all closed down in my area), they have a candy bar that I think is made by Cadbury that is basically a Marathon bar, or at least they did a couple years ago…no guarantees.

Dutchess_III's avatar

McDonald’s french fries..the old style that they quit making in the 80’s.

dalepetrie's avatar

FYI, those Cadbury bars are called “Curly Wurly”, they’re made in England and you can get them on Amazon.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Finally! Someone is actually here with me! Hi @dalepetrie!!
