What kind of synth is used in the song "Petrification"?

Asked by beatthelastboss (306points) October 24th, 2009

Where can I get it? If you are not familiar with the song, you can see it here:

The synth I am looking for comes in at around 0:43 into the video. Thanks a bunch!

It’s a pretty generic sound – there are plenty of synths that can make the sound.

From what my ears tell me, it’s a sawtooth waveform with distortion.

Do you want a hardware or software synth?

Software please, free would be prefered. Thanks! I use fruityloops, so a VST would be nice :D

You should be able to make a pretty close approximation of it with:

1. The 3xOSC
2. The Wasp
3. The fruity DX10
4: Sytrus

All are fruity plugins, and depending on what version of the software you have, one or all of them will be included. the 3xOSC plugin will definitely be there, regardless of version.

Here is an example of a 3xOSC synth sound that’s (kind of) like the synth in the song.

Note the distortion, the very tight reverb and the filters on the synth. By the way, only one of the oscillators is turned up – the others are muted.

Hope that example helps.

@the100thmonkey Thank you! You have already done so much, but I wanted to know if you could replicate one last think. My dream software synth would be the one used in the “Lawn wake” series, by the flashbulb. Do yo have any ideas? Here is what it sounds like, the average, crazy ol’ drill n’ bass synth.

Comes in about 10 seconds into the song, stays for the rest of the time. Thanks so much! Lurve!

You listen to some pretty hardcore stuff -way different from the vibe I usually listen to :)

Ummm. You have Sytrus as part of FL Studio?

If you do, take a preset called “Acid” and turn off the delay: FX channel on the far right under the preset switch buttons; pull the feedback (FB) slider all the way to zero. Wack at least two Fruity Fast Dist plugins on it. Max them out.

You should end up with a sound approaching that on Lawn Wake, although obviously different.
