How can I fix an ipod classic that won't sync?

The ipod, 80gb Classic, started showing errors “can’t sync”, then erased everything on it. I returned it to original state, still does same thing. Will take a small amount, then errors start

If it’s a first gen then you may need to un-update your iTunes.
