What are your most essential/useful mac applications.

Asked by rguest (201points) October 25th, 2009

I am looking for some applications to download onto my mac. I just love finding new applications to use. Just recently I discovered fluid and Things for mac. What are your most used, loved, or essential applications?

Useful: Transmit (FTP/SFTP/S3 client), Transmission (Bittorrent client) and TextMate (Programmer-type text editor).

Loved: Tweetie (Twitter client) and the first non-“T” word: Adium (multi-protocol instant messenger client; I use the beta because it has a few extra feature I needed/wanted, IRC for instance).

I like Quicksilver, but I don’t use it to its full potential.

(I use it mainly to open files and applications, but there are about 100 more things you can do with it (try looking around online for ideas)).

I like Solitaire XL because it is easy to use/modify and it works.

Vienna is, in my opinion, the best RSS reader for Mac out there. Its layout is very similar to iTunes, and it works very well with Firefox. (If you ctrl-click on a link, you can choose to open it in Firefox. Awesome.)

Self control (limits your internet activity for things so you can actually do work on the internet)
Vidala (within the Vidala package is a program called Tor which encrypts your net activity, makes it safer to torrent etc.)
Bean (really tiny and intuitive word processor)
xAct (to convert FLAC files to an iTunes readable format)
Disk InventoryX (Generates an image of your hard drive, shows you how much space any one thing is taking up, good for cleaning out the hard drive)
App Cleaner ( Whenever you trash an app, any associated files with it are also gone)
VLC (super-powerful media player)
FairGame (converts all your iTunes files into .mp3 or .avi whatever you prefer)
AppFresh (lets you know when there’s an update for any app you have)

edit: I use Open Office for word processing, plus it’s got a ton of other things like powerpoint and spreadsheets

Bean. Sticky Windows. AppFresh. XMind. DropBox. Adium. Firefox. Butler. Buddi + Cashbox. AppCleaner. AppleJack. AdobeAir for Focused and TweetDeck. The UnArchiver and/or Zipeg. HandBrake. EverNote. iProcrastinate. iTool (but will probably trash it since I got AppleJack already). Jing. SimpleCap. MyDiary. NetNewsWire. QuickSilver (but I still need to learn how to maximize this). SideNote. Skim. smcFanControl. Think + Pomodoro. Tofu. VoodooPad Lite.

Most of the apps here are freeware. Sticky Windows is not. But it’s a really cool app.

I just found MacHeist, a development company.

They have all (most?) of their popular apps for FREE, today and tomorrow.

Go see if it is something you would use!

Thank goodness for Lifehacker and Google (and Fluther, too).
