What kind of pillow & blanket, if any, should my toddler be sleeping with?

Asked by marauder76 (390points) October 26th, 2009

I’m wanting to know more from parents of toddlers between 18–24 months of age what type of bedding they use in their kids’ cribs. Should a child in this age range have any kind of pillow at all? A light or heavy blanket? Does anyone actually use a top sheet with a child of this age? We fold up a thin quilt which our daughter uses as a pillow, and also give her one small blanket, but she frequently rests her head on a stuffed animal, which leads me to believe that she may be ready for a thicker pillow. Any feedback from personal experience, or citations to expert guidelines, would be appreciated. Thank you.

Generally speaking, from my research, I understand there should be nothing in the crib with an infant..so with both of my children I didn’t put anything in the crib…when my oldest turned 3, I got him a little pillow…which he totally ignores as he sleeps on a curled up blanket ball that he manages to make by rolling around a lot right before falling asleep…

My son used a pillow by this age. I just made certain it was a smaller size toddler pillow and yes, he had his blankie, and a top blanket at this age.

In my experience, toddlers sleep with a small blanket. I’ve seen some sleep with a pillow.
Infants shouldn’t have anything in their cribs because they can’t turn over or move things off their faces if they start to suffocate. A toddler can move things around to be safe, so there isn’t nearly as much concern. Just make sure there’s nothing that can wrap around the neck and strangle the kid.

if an infant isn’t supposed to have anything in the crib, won’t they get chilly? Or is it okay to swaddle them?

@poofandmook until it’d be called I didn’t put anything on them in terms of blankets…when it got chillier, I’d put them socks and a thin cardigan on them to sleep…when it’d get cold, I put a heavy blanket on them and wrapped it tight around their bodies so it’d have less of a chance to travel…with my first I did swaddle, I remember, now…used a large receiveing blanket and made it a tight wrap…gave that up with the second one…

@poofandmook They make these awesome zip up blankies for this purpose now

My toddler got too hot for things with feet so a blanket was a must.

@poofandmook Swaddling is more than ok until they can roll over. After that, use warm jammies and/or a sleep sack.

My son likes a big toddler quilt to sleep with, even when it’s hot out. His is the one that came with the crib bedding, so if you know what those quilts look like, they’re rectangular and perfect toddler size. He started using it I think at least six months ago, and he’s 27 months old.
Prior to that, we used smaller warm blankets, enough for him to have something to hold onto, but not terribly big.
He just got a pillow like two weeks ago, and sometimes uses it, but I think he just likes having it in the crib, makes him feel like a big boy. He pushes it off to the side when he sleeps.

I don’t remember when we first put a blanket on my son, but he is three and has never actually kept a blanket on. He won’t keep it on while he’s awake, and if you put it on after he’s asleep he’ll kick it off in the night. I just try to put him in appropriate jammies, usually with feet in the winter.

Warm blankies and soft pillows.

@Val123 I <3 your literal answer! Teehee!

@Val123 Then here’s my answer: A blanket made of cloth and a pillow filled with stuffing!

@SpatzieLover Wull sure! That’s better than a blankie made of rice paper and a pillow filled with rocks! Srsly!

I have a better solution. Use an all-in-one nap mat. Definitely check out http://www.RoyalNapMat.com. It sells all-in-one, custom toddler napmats. They have a cute selection of fonts to personalize your mat and their mats fits both the small and large day care cots. My son loves his and uses it just to lounge around the house.
