How can one obtain an MA in Chemistry instead of an MS?

Asked by poofandmook (17320points) October 26th, 2009

I was researching chemistry graduate programs around NJ, and Temple in Philadelphia offers an MA in chemistry, but not an MS. How on earth could chemistry be considered an art and not a science?

Are you sure it wasn’t just a misprint in the catalog or something…?

same way you can get a BA in chem and not a BS

@Simone_De_Beauvoir: My question would be the same.

@poofandmook oh well the definitong of ARTS when you get a BA or an MA is very broad…and chemistry can be considered an ART, for sure

I wonder what the difference in curriculum would be then, for a BA/MA in chemistry as opposed to a BS/MS.

Technically, an Arts degree requires less credits then a science degree for a given discipline. But, this varies wildly with the school. For instance, I’ve taken enough credits to have a BS in chemistry, but I was awarded a BA because that’s what my school calls it, for whatever reason. It shouldn’t make an impact in future career.

@BhacSsylan: I was told that a MS is valued more than a MA for non-teaching careers…?

Well, okay, I’m not sure about a masters, that may be true. I know BA vs BS doesn’t matter much. I got into a Ph. D. program without any trouble with my BA. So, I’d be a little surprised if that was the case for Masters, but I’m not sure.

Check out Drexel U. It offers a MS in chemistry. Better location than Temple also.

My school offers a BA or a BS in most science classes and the difference comes down to the one math class in most cases. So it has very little meaning. In terms of grad programs it can have very little meaning whether it’s an MA or an MS. It often has more to do with the individual school than anything else.

Thank you Gail… I couldn’t get their site to work this morning and forgot to check back!

@Beta_Orionis: I’m trying to find him a wealth of chemistry grad programs that will allow us to live together and me to keep my job. Philadelphia is about as far west as possible :)

@Beta_Orionis: yes. I got all the New Jersey schools, and from what I can tell, all the Philadelphia schools, and a couple of NYC schools too.

@poofandmook yeah, I suppose random suggestions wouldn’t be much help at this point… Best of luck!
