Can humans pass Kennel cough onto dogs?

Asked by OpryLeigh (25310points) October 27th, 2009

My Jack Russell Terrier has just come down with kennel cough (even though she has been vaccinated) obviously we have been in touch with vet (who recommended a small mount of childs cough medicine before resorting to antibiotics!).

Apart from the horrendous cough my dog is fine in herself, she seems happy and hasn’t gone of her food. What worries me (and I can’t seem to get a straight answer from anyone about this!) is that I am in contact with lots of dogs on a daily basis. Can I pass kennel cough onto other dogs? Ie: Can it linger on my clothing, shoes, hands etc? Or is it literally just passed on from dog to dog?

No. It’s spread through aerosolized particulates, and so is very infectious in areas where dogs congregate, but it does not persist in the environment.
