I use eMusic, which apparently doesn’t offer the highest quality. can anyone point me to alternatives? I use a Mac, incidentally, so no services that just use Windows. danken!

Legal? iTunes sells their DRM free music at a pretty high bitrate (256Kbps)
Illegal? Torrents for almost everything can be found with very high bitrates.
as far as illegal DL’s, I already know how to get it illegally. note the “legal music downloading” in tags.

Sorry I didnt see that, Have you tried iTunes?
of course I know about iTunes and have used it if I couldn’t find a song on eMusic. I wanted to know about other options.
You could always just buy the music to download from online stores such as 7digital (who offer MP3s or AACs at 320kbps).
Frostwire works pretty well. Or limewire
as I have already mentioned, I meant legal downloads.
