Do you still use email?

I read a post on Techcrunch where they called email ‘so 1994’ (even though most people didn’t have email back then but…) and they basically went on to say that a modern website/company must enable easy use of twitter, Facebook, apps etc for all its customers since that is what everyone uses and that this is the 21st century.
So, my question is, is email dead as means of communication? Is it it all about silly tweets and mobile apps now? Does one have to have a Facebook account no matter how silly it is for grown ups to spend their valuable time sending each other meaningless quizzes and widgets and ‘poking’ one another? Am I just old and sad because I like emails?
Do you use emails or do you prefer other modes of communication – if so which ones?

Of course email is still used as a modern way of communicating. Email is still the best way to communicate privately, fast (plus everyone has email today), involve other people and cc, attach files and what not. I think you’re confusing email for newsletters and marketing, or maybe the writer is a little too enthusiastic about Google Wave. Did you mean to ask: Is email dead as means of mass communication?
Ps. If you want to discuss an article I think it’s best to include a link.
I don’t use Twitter or Facebook. I have no need to. Email I would be hard-pressed to live without. The phrase they used sounds more like a fifteen year-old trying to sound cool.
Far more than i use facebook. Firstly because it has the possiblity to send files along. secondly because it’s FAR more efficient and secure.
I can’t even imagine life without email! I do like Facebook but there are many things I don’t necessarily want to share with the world so I wouldn’t put it in there.
It seems like such a chore to write something on paper with a pen, find an envelope, get a stamp and mail the bloody thing. Then have to wait a week or so for it go get from here to there. And then wait another week or so for a response.
Absolutely! I can hardly imagine a huge corporation moving their communication to Twitter, leaving it in the hands of the twitter fail whale.
Email is not outdated, that’s ridiculous.
Twitter? Facebook? nope, have no use for either of those. Hell, I still write actual letters and send them to people via the USPS.
Don’t count email out just yet. It’s still the best way to recycle all those old jokes that never seem to die.
I use email for private notes to friends, and post on Facebook the events I want to share with everyone.
Keep in mind, though, that not everyone is on FB. Only half my friends use it.
I use email several times a day. I don’t twitter & never will. But I love FB & IMing. Email will never go out. It’s too much of a basic way to communicate.
I still use e-mail all the time, especially at work where pretty much all social applications are blocked. I don’t think e-mail will completely go away for a very long time. It could fall to the way-side in the near future with Google Wave and all the other applications coming out there, but e-mail will still be a great means of private communication.
Professionally, email is the formal part of my life and I could not live without it’s archival efficiency and efficiently to the point—much more efficient than the ‘old’ days of typed memos and personal secretaries.
However, I’m very struck by the efficiency with which we document these little discussion we have here. They could fire-up and flare-out within an hour. They could persist over several days. If one wanted some sort of Delphi process could lead to a functional conclusion to the discussion. I COULD USE THIS AT MY WORKPLACE NOW! if it would not cost too much
Yes, I still use email. It’s how I can send large batches of photos to relatives. Not all my friends are on FB, so when we plan outings, we email. A lot of jobs require that you send a resume to an email address. Whoever wrote that article was trying to make a deadline and/or be a pithy little SOB, and did not research the facts. Most people with an internet connection still use email.
I use my e-mail daily. It’s a much better way to get in touch with me than facebook or twitter.
Social Media messaging is no replacement for a well crafted email in business. Just as a well crafted email is no replacement for a well written – handwritten – letter, though the first two can come closer in personal matters.
I use email all the time (especially for work) and also have FacebookHowever, if you really need to speak to me your best bet is to just call me on the phone (or is that so 1876???)
E-mail is one of several needed types of communication. New types of communication changes the meaning of other older ones. If you want to make someone happy, send a card or better yet a letter. These days it means that you made an effort. But the nature of email will likely change too. Google waves seems pretty interesting. Everything changes, and is still kind of the same.
That said, I still don’t see any personal use what so ever, of either twitter nor facebook. It probably means that I am old.
I use 4 personal email addresses which I check at least once daily (and 1 work email which I use all day M-F 9–5), in addition to being on Facebook, Twitter, & My Space. I am usually on FB at least once a day, but only go on Twitter a few times a month and My Space maybe once or twice a month. I don’t have web or email access on my cellphone, else I’d be checking my email, & probably FB, too, more often.
I just came across a recently published book titled The Tyranny of eMail. I don’t recommend it. It contains a short history of written communication and uninspired advice on how to escape from being controlled by your email. I was just thinking how ticked the author would be if everybody switched from email to Facebook and Twitter.
Sure I use email. I don’t see it being replaced by anything else just yet.
I have the work email and the personal one used all the time. Then of course the throw-away one for sigining up for coupons etc.
I wondered why I wasn’t getting some of the email and invites I had in the past – until I joined FB. NOW I get it. I keep up with my college age kid, my nieces and nephews and know about what’s going on in my community than I ever did before. I am also finding more folks are talking and sharing information and ideas this way, and not so much for multiple cc’s on emails to come to a decision. Assuming that you’re FB’ing in real time.
Email will be around = how else will we get jokes and personal notes and discussions?
I also do use pen, paper and stamps. Not as much as I used to, but there is something to be said for the old fashioned letter or Thank You note!
I use my email every day to send and receive texts from my husband and other relatives. The screen on my phone is broken and I can’t afford a new one at the moment.
What else would I use? Snailmail?
I am resisting Facebook and Twitter with every fiber of my aging being. E-mail and Fluther are as far as I want to go in cyber-communication…...
@janbb – Thank you for resisting the Twitter nonsense! it’s bloody ridiculous, if you ask me. it’s like facebook, minus the facebook and with the status.
E-mail is necessary for work so it’s not going away any time soon.
I don’t use Twitter or Facebook. Email, it is.
