Does anyone know when/where/ the most lasting trend among women’s dresses, “the little black dress”, got its start?

Little Black Dress
There it says that Chanel made it popular, but in my opinion it was Audrey Hepburn’s Givenchy dress in Breakfast at Tiffany’s.
Or the classic version (which I remember really well).
The pearls, the hairdo and the waif-like qualities were enviable, also.
@Grisaille – That’s not a dress, thats a long sock! Wow!! Great pic!
Back in the early 20th century, all the girls of New York City were fawning over me. I certainly couldn’t decide which one(s) should be my ladyfriend(s). So I had to devise a way to help me decide.
I told them all to go out and get the sexiest black dress they could. The winner(s) could stay.
There were a lot of winners.
@Sarcasm: For someone who thinks that 50 is old, you put yourself at over 100 – if you really mean the “early 20th century.”
@Facade oh god, you don’t even know
@Grisaille I know that picture only because of you
