I found an earthworm in the middle of my kitchen floor this morning. Is this a sign of a problem?

Asked by Sabotage82 (615points) October 29th, 2009

For starts, I live in a split level duplex. I am in the lower level that is half way underground. The place is plenty old. I believe it was built in the 60’s.

Anyway, this morning I walked into my kitchen and found an earthworm lying in the middle of my kitchen floor. I have no idea where it got in. I looked around the kitchen; I didn’t see any holes. Does anybody know if this could be a sign of a bigger problem that I am not aware of in terms of the condition of the house? Has anybody else ever found an earthworm lying randomly on your floor?

Is it raining? Rain drives them out of the ground, and one could have randomly wiggled in.

It has been raining. That is a possibility. But that has never happened in any other place I live. I was thinking it might be easier since I do live half way underground.

I think the moisture caused a one-time event. I doubt you have a problem.

I wouldn’t worry about it. If it has been raining then the earthworm has come out of the ground, and they can crawl/squirm for long distances. This one just happened to come inside out of the rain, and into your warm apartment. No big deal.

Thanks for the input. Made for an interesting morning. My girl hates worms. So I pestered her all through breakfast about it. lmao.

It sounds like the part of your house that is underground isn’t completely sealed.
